Feel like playing the barbarian bully or the mobile fortress, but intimidated by the choice of attributes and passives in the Gate of Fates? Here's a guide with a few tips on how to take control of a basic warrior.

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem: Basic Warrior Build — Tank & Melee Combat

Wolcen has just come out, so naturally the best builds are not yet known. Here's a first basic warrior build for beginners, in addition to our beginner's guide.

This will help you progress while waiting for more advanced tools to guide you step-by-step through the Gate of Fates.

Choice of skills

There are dozens of techniques available and you can only choose five to start with. You can consult the vendor in town, who often updates her inventory. Here's a short list of excellent, easy-to-use attacks to play with:

Basic attacks

  • Anvil's Woe: A huge, devastating attack right in front of you. Simple and effective, with modifiers and a good weapon, it can demolish bosses and small groups of enemies.

Or/and

  • Wrath of Baäpheth: A series of quick attacks over a wide area in front of you. Perfect for clearing the area of vermin.

Or/and

  • Blade Storm: A large, rotating attack that is quite painful to use preferably with a two-handed weapon. By investing in its modifiers and with the good liabilities, you can play the famous build Whirlwind and whirl permanently or almost permanently.

Or/and

  • Bleeding Edge: This attack gives you a good option for a 360° attack, as you will often be surrounded. It can also become a ranged attack or even a passive rotational attack with the right runes.

Support techniques

  • Sovereign Shout: An absolute must have for all warrior builds, this is really what you need first. It is a source of rage which will bring you many bonuses of survival and attack.
  • Wings of Ishmir: Another technique almost obligatory, since it will generate rage in addition to offering you mobility. It can be used to attack as well as to flee. As a bonus, its upgrades will generate various useful bonuses.

Optional

  • Juggernaut: A protective zone to blow a blow and heal you, which won't be a luxury against the bosses.
  • Blood for Blood: A large area that will give you various useful bonuses and inflict wounds on the enemy. With the right modifiers, you'll be able to stick it on you or the boss, so you don't have to worry about moving around.

Attributes

Choosing which attribute to invest in is a difficult decision. It will depend on how you want to play. In any case, we advise you to invest in Toughness, and maybe even make it your primary or secondary attribute.

Put the rest of your points in Ferocity, or the other way around if you prefer to play more aggressively. Some people invest almost everything in Ferocity and rely on their enemies dying quickly in order to survive.

Equipment selection & statistics

Your first big choice will be to decide what kind of weapon you're going to play with. Broadly speaking, you can choose:

  1. A one-handed weapon and a shield, to become a tank.
  2. A two-handed weapon to inflict huge damage with your attacks. You will depend more on your techniques.
  3. A weapon in each hand to attack very quickly.
  4. A weapon in one hand and a catalyst or a gun in the other hand to play a hybrid.

There are obviously other ways to equip and other possible priorities depending on your choice of passive and your character orientation plans.

  • It's not mandatory, but you'll have to give priority to blocking if you play shield. You can also benefit from it with other weapons via certain passives or pieces of equipment. In any case, it will take life as well as block score to absorb it.
  • You will get bonuses that affect attacks, not to be confused with spell bonuses (which only affect techniques that require to be used with a staff or a catalyst).
  • The life drain statistic will be of immense help for survival.
  • In the same way, favor the rage bonuses, avoid the willpower bonuses.
  • Be careful, it is not very intuitive, but the damage and effects are divided into several large families. You'll be looking for attack damage, not spell damage, and you'll want material damage bonuses (aka physical damage) in most cases. Unless you're trying to play a variant of sacred paladin, in which case, take occult damage. If you play a variant based on fire damage, then it will be elementary damage. You will have to take into account the techniques that you have selected, otherwise you may make a mistake in your equipment choices. It may be wise to use the runes of the techniques to adapt their element.

Passives

You can go in many different directions and take spheres that will help you create your own style of play.

For a warrior, red dots are usually more suitable, but you can definitely invest in blue and green dots if you need to. For example, in the 2nd circle, there are mage talents that also improve willpowerl and maximum rage, which is a huge comfort boost and improves your ability to chain attacks.

Don't hesitate to spin the wheels, and don't hesitate to make useful "detours" with your points. You will be able to go to several destinations in the future.

Here is a list of the most widespread generalist liabilities as well as the useful ones for a warrior :

  • Damage Bonus
  • Maximum life
  • Critical Damage Bonus
  • Maximum Wilpowerl and Rage Bonus
  • Cost reduction in Willpower and Rage (indicated as a "+" ironically)
  • Resistance Bonus
  • Life drain
  • Reduced cooldown time
  • Maximum Life Bonus
  • Attack speed
  • Critical chances
  • +25 Toughness or Ferocity

The Soldier Tree (the first one) is full of big, useful highlights like "The Wild Card", which improves criticism, or "The Fire of Action" which gives Rage when you get hit.

The Warmonger Tree also has good things like "Gods Among Men" which converts all your damage into material damage and boosts the latter, "Bestial Frenzy", and especially "Feast for the Crows" which improves life absorption. Tanks or players in need of survival will want to take a turn in the Praetorian tree for blocking bonuses.

The point that caught our attention the most is in the 3rd circle however, in the Child of Fury section, the fantastic "Furious Appetite" bonus that turns all your Willpower into Rage, and makes you regenerate Rage passively instead of Willpower.

This will totally transform your gaming experience. If you don't feel like taking the lead anymore, just go for it.

Apocalyptic form

This choice will only be offered to you at the end of Chapter 1, and you will not be able to change it before the end of the story. The Aspect of Dawn is appropriate for tanks, the flesh aspect is good for more aggressive players.
