Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian, is one of the legendary items in World of Warcraft and is the third and last obtainable in WoW Classic. Discover our complete guide dedicated to obtaining the Greatstaff of Medivh, the famous Guardian of Tirisfal.

WoW Classic: Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian, Guide

Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian is one of the three legendary weapons in WoW Classic, and is the third and last one to become obtainable. Obtaining Atiesh is much harder than Sulfuras and Thunderfury, it requires you to venture deep into Naxxramas , the last raid of WoW Classic.

Who can obtain Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian?

In total, 4 classes can wield and use Atiesh

Important: Each class has access to a uniqueversion of Atiesh :

In order to obtain this legendary and overpowered staff, players will have to gather the Atiesh Splinters by venturing into Naxxramas, greatly enhancing their reputation with Brood of Nozdormu, defeating Kel'thuzad in Naxxramas and C'Thun in Ahn Qiraj. before finally defeating Atiesh in person. Here is the step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Gather the Atiesh Fragments

Your first goal is not related to any quest. You need to get 40 Splinter of Atiesh andomly obtained from the 12 bosses of Naxxramas, the last raid of WoW Classic. Do not get me wrong, this is a very complicated step as these fragments do not have a 100% drop rate, and each raid is made up of 40 players. All fragments should be assigned to the same player to form the legendary staff as quickly as possible.

Once you have 40 Atiesh Splinters in your possession, right click on them to form the first piece of your future legendary staff: Frame of Atiesh. This item will also begin the next part of your journey: Frame of Atiesh.

Step 2: Recover Atiesh's Head and base

You need to find someone who can help you find the head and base of Atiesh, and this person is none other than the mighty Anachronos, the huge dragon at the entrance to the Caverns of Time, Tanaris.

Nevertheless, before you can address this bronze dragon, you will have to improve your reputation with the faction he represents, the Brood of Nozdormu. If you come to this step of the quest, you should be well advanced and have a decent reputation, however here are the challenges that await you if you do not:

  • You start at the stage of Hated at 0/36 000,
  • Once 36,000 points are earned, you become Hostile at 0 / 3,000,
  • Once you have acquired these 3,600 points, you become Unfriendly at 0/3 000,
  • Finally, after getting these 3,000 points you become Neutral at 0 / 3,000 and can interact with the NPCs of Nozdormu Brood.

In order to increase your reputation with this faction, you need to defeat creatures (trash and boss) in Ahn Qiraj Ruins (AQ 20) and Ahn Qiraj Temple (AQ 40). Until Neutral, the objectives you are doing for your quests, all creatures etc give you reputation, but this is not the case beyond.

Once Neutral with the Brood of Nozdormu, go to Anachronos at the entrance of the Caverns of Time, in Tanaris, to complete the quest Frame of Atiesh. He will then offer you the most difficult quest in WoW Classic: Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff.

In order to accomplish this, you will have to combine a few things first, a group of powerful allies, patience and impeccable team-play since you'll be required to obtain two very well-guarded objects:

  • Base of Atiesh, a guaranteed drop when you kill C'Thun, the final boss of Ahn Qiraj Temple (AQ 40), the 6th WoW Classic Raid,
  • Staff head of Atiesh, a guaranteed drop when you kill Kel'Thuzad, the final boss of Naxxramas , the 7th and last raid of WoW Classic.

If you manage to complete this part of the quest chain, the staff can be considered yours as the final quest is simple compared to this monstrous quest, C'Thun and Kel'Thuzad being real giants that few guilds had originally defeated.

Step 3: Purifying Atiesh

Once the two most powerful bosses of WoW Classic have been defeated, only one step (and not the easiest) separates you from your prestigious staff: the purification of Atiesh. To do this, Anachronos offers you a quest dedicated to your class whose objective is identical for all classes, but for which the reward is slightly different:

You are then asked to go to Stratholme in the company of 4 powerful allies (T3 stuff required at least for the Tank) in possession of Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian (the staff you just reformed). Once there, go to the Festival Lane located in the exact center right of the city, between the "Crusaders" and the "Scourge" part of the instance, as indicated below.

Be sure to clear the entire area, then find the small mound of dedicated land in the area. It should shine and be relatively visibly. Once found, use Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian on it to purify the staff and extract its demonic host: Atiesh.

Some important notes to know about Atiesh:

  • He has 200,000 health points, which is as much as a "lower" boss of the Molton Core ,
  • Atiesh is ambidextrous and owns Andonisus, Reaper of Souls, for good messure he has two of them,
  • On a Tank with equipment coming from Naxxramas, Atiesh does blows inflicting between 600 and 1000 damage, It's possible to disarm him (Warrior, Rogue) to reduce the damage he inflicts, but by doing so he'll instantly inflicts 1,500 damage to the Tank just before being disarmed,
  • When a Warrior or Rogue disarms Atiesh, he drops Andonisus, Reaper of Souls on the ground. One of the players (a Rogue or Warrior in this case) can and must recover it to inflict heavy damage to the boss,
  • Every two seconds, the wearer of Andonisus, Reaper of Souls suffers damage at 5% of its maximum health,
  • Andonisus, Reaper of Souls disappears after 5 minutes whether Atiesh has been defeated or not. It also disappears if the player wearing it leaves Stratholme .

Once Atiesh is defeated, return to Anachronos in front of the Caverns of Time, Tanaris, and have him complete your quest to get the staff.

Congratulations, you are now the wilder of one of the most powerful legendary weapons in World of Warcraft, but also the rarest and most coveted of all.

Congratulations to those who managed to get this legendary staff, and good luck to those trying their luck!
