If you fancy taking on a lengthy sidequest in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, then Batreaux has just the job for you.
By helping him out with various tasks and exploring certain locations, you can collect a total of 80 Gratitude Crystals. By showing these Crystals to Batreaux, he'll reward you with items such as Wallets, Medals, and even a Piece of Heart.
Here's what you'll need to do.
In order to obtain Gratitude Crystals, you must first find Kukiel as part of the Missing Child quest. The prerequisite for this is that you have placed the Ruby Tablet inside the Statue of the Goddess.
Once that's done, speak to Wyrna outside. She's looking for her little girl. This begins the Missing Child quest. You can speak to Orielle and Rusta to get additional clues for the quest, although these are not required to complete the quest.
One of the optional clues points you in the direction of the Graveyard, to a storage shed. Naturally, this must be at night, so find a bed and get your head down for a bit.
Once it's night, head to the Graveyard and look for a tombstone near a tree. Hit it, and it'll light up. Push it out of the way and the storage shed - found to the west - will open.
Head inside, down the ladder, follow the tunnel, and swing your sword at the demon there.
You'll see a cutscene, and Batreux will ask you to collect Gratitude Crystals.
Once he's done this, wait until morning (find a bed to advance time), and return to Wryna to complete the Missing Child sidequest.
You'll receive your first batch of five Gratitude Crystals, and can now go off and obtain more.
How to get Gratitude Crystals
The 80 Gratitude Crystals are divided into two parts - the 65 you can obtain from helping people, and 15 found in the wild.
Here is the list of side quests you can complete to get Crystals:
Speak to Wryna at the Statue of the Goddess.
Prerequisite: Ruby Tablet placed inside Statue of the Goddess
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Speak to Parrow in the plaza south of Skyloft.
Prerequisite: Complete Missing Sister
Reward: 10 Gratitue Crystals & Empty Bottle
Speak to Fledge at the Knight Academy.
Prerequisite: None
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals & unlocks Pumpkin Pull minigame
Speak to Cawlin at the Knight Academy.
Prerequisite: None
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Head to Bertie's House at night and speak to Bertie.
Prerequisite: Requires Clawshots
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Head to Sparrot's House, on the eastern side of Skyloft and speak to Sparrot.
Prerequisite: Defeat The Imprisoned for the second time.
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Speak to Kina near the pumpkin patch at Pumpkin Landing.
Prerequisite: Complete Missing Child and defeat The Imprisoned for the second time.
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Speak to Peatrice at the Item Check in the morning.
Prerequisite: Complete Missing Child, and after Peatrice starts calling you 'darling'.
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals
Speak to Strich at Bug Rock inside the Thunderhead.
Prerequisite: Complete Missing Child, defeat Bilocyte.
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals & one half-price item at Beedle's Shop
Speak to Instructor Owlan at the Knight Academy.
Prerequisite: Complete Missing Child, defeat Bilocyte.
Reward 5 Gratitude Crystals
Speak to Dodoh on Fun Fun Island.
Prerequisite: Fix Scrapper
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals & unlock Skydiving Roulette minigame.
Speak to Mallara in the red house on the eastern side of Skyloft.
Prerequisite: Obtain the Gust Bellows
Reward: 5 Gratitude Crystals & 20 Rupees.
For the remaining 15 Gratitude Crystals, you will find them in various locations. They can only be seen at night though, so make sure you advance time accordingly.
Here's where you can find them:
#1 - Skyloft - You'll find this on a ledge just north of the Bazaar.
#2 - Skyloft - This one is behind a tree near the pumpkin patch to the east of Skyloft.
#3 - Skyloft - Head through the Waterfall Cave and look for the Crystal among the flowers.
#4 - Skyloft - In an alcove in the Waterfall Cave, where the Loftwing was found.
#5 - Knight Academy - Inside Link's room, on the desk.
#6 - Knight Academy - Upstairs, near a plant.
#7 - Skyloft - South of the Academy you'll find some vines. Climb down for the Crystal.
#8 - Skyloft - In Orielle's house, south of the Bazaar.
#9 - Skyloft - Behind the Light Tower, in the Plaza.
#10 - Pumpkin Landing - On the second floor of the Lumpy Pumpkin, after using the bed to turn day into night.
#11 - Pumpkin Landing - Go to the pumpkin patch and head right. Use the ramp to find a shed, and the Crystal.
#12 - Sparring Hall - You'll need the Beetle to get the Crystal from up in the rafters.
#13 - Beedle's Island - Head to the shop in the daytime and use the bed. The Crystal will be outside - use the Beetle to claim it from the propeller.
#14 - Knight Academy - Climb up the outside of the building. Use the Clawshots to get up to the chimney, then drop down to the room. The Crystal is through a crawlspace to Zelda's room.
#15 - Skyloft - Head to the floating islands on the west of Skyloft, and use Clawshots on the vines to get to the island with the waterfall. The Crystal is in the mouth.
