After a six-year career as a widely respected commentator, Henry 'HenryG' Greer has hung up the mic for a new role in reshaping Cloud9's CS:GO operations.

HenryG becomes Cloud9 General Manager

Veteran commentator Henry 'HenryG' Greer has joined Cloud9 as General Manager of the North American organization's CS:GO team, as part as a complete rebuild.

With the move reported by Richard Lewis for Dexerto, Greer will also be joined by coach Aleksandar 'kassad' Trifunović, and an all-new roster that is still to be decided upon.

The current roster will continue to compete under the Cloud9 banner for the time being, with the organization pledging to find the players 'teams that are good fits and will help them further their careers'. However, it's essentially a clean break for the org, which has underperformed from their peak as a top-ten global team.

“We’re entering a new stage in our CS:GO development, and we’re really excited to show our fans and community what we’ve been working on," said Jack Etienne, Cloud9 CEO and co-founder. "We’re grateful to our existing roster and all their hard work and determination – as we enter this next chapter, we’re dedicated to finding them a new home that will empower their continued growth.”

Greer announced his retirement as a caster after a six-year run in an interview with Dbltap's Jarek 'DeKay' Lewis on Friday, citing issues with the casting scene in general, being jaded, and the realisation he was just 'done with commentary'.

One section of his interview in particular was widely shared on social media, including by League of Legends caster Indiana 'Froskurinn' Black.

Following news of Greer's retirement from casting, journalist and esports historian Duncan 'Thorin' Shields put together a touching farewell video, featuring a who's who of the CS:GO scene.

As for Greer's new move, the only way is up.

“C9 have entrusted me with their entire CS:GO dynasty and, honestly, I think that's one of the boldest moves any org has made in a long time.” he says in his interview with Dexerto. ”Failure simply isn't an option.”

We wish Henry all the best in his new venture, and look forward to seeing what Cloud9 can do!
