Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tells the story of a decades-long conspiracy, culminating in the early 1980s in the heat of the Cold War. This is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, and picks up where the first game left off, with Alex Mason, Frank Woods and Jason Hudson joining forces with a new group of agents to unravel a global terrorist plot.
Exploring the Cold War represents the perfect playground for powerful weapons, spies, and the essence of the series fans have been waiting for as a successor to the original game.
As revealed, in the multiplayer modes you will take on the role of either a CIA or Spetsnaz agent.
A Story of Tradition
It's no secret that the game modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War aren't going to change drastically overnight. Instead, we find the same styles that have rocked us for years, and that's not a bad thing.
Year after year, we enjoy these well-known modes with new features that totally change the game, offering a feeling of novelty. In this new title, we discover different elements that come to bring a little more dynamism — in particular the possibility of breaking windows to either pass through or target enemies through — something we already see on Warzone.
Another game mechanic that may delight some is the use of ziplines between different platforms, especially on Armada. Recently added to Warzone, it's undeniable that this feature brings a much greater sense of freedom than in Modern Warfare.
In addition, it is worth pointing out that vehicles will be made available to you on certain maps, in order to roll over your enemies.
These are just some of the familiar game modes that will be available in Black Ops Cold War:
- KIll Confirmed
- Team Deathmatch
- Search & Destroy
- Domination
New ways to play include:
- VIP Escort
- Combined Arms
- Fireteam
Back to Basics
Gone are the moments spent dying when barely touching water — swimming is making a comeback, offering many more possibilities in infiltrating a point of enemy domination. Step into the shoes of a combat swimmer to flush out an opponent and rule the battlefield! This mechanic was present in Call of Duty: World War II and Black Ops 4, but had disappeared by the time Modern Warfare was released.
In addition, well-known maps return, to please even the most hardened veteran.
- Crossroads
- Miami
- Satellite
If you thought you'd see these maps looking a bit retro, you'd be seriously wrong. The maps have been reworked to provide a high-quality graphical experience. The maps are beautiful, confirming the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will find a good home on next-gen consoles.
The killstreaks of yesteryear are back, including RC-XD, Artillery and War Machine. Above all, let's not forget the big comeback of the minimap! It had been the subject of much debate when Modern Warfare was released, and here it is, finally back on our screens.
Not So Fast, Maurice!
Unfortunately, there are some very popular game mechanics that will not be included in Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer modes. The first is the absence of doors to open, something which allowed a much more tactical approach to enclosed spaces. In addition, the tactical sprint — which has saved many lives in Warzone — is absent, offering a feeling of failure in the hunt for enemies.
Conversely, the in-game HUD is much more retro than the maps. Even though some visuals are taken straight from Modern Warfare — notably the game's introductions — there is a perpetual conflict between the old and the new, bringing a strange mix in the first few minutes of play.
While we can be happy to see the killstreaks of old, there are also fewer assets. This is something that can be a bit off-putting for players accustomed to Modern Warfare's combat setups. The choice is probably a little limited, but it's likely for the best. We must admit that, when we have too many possibilities as a player, it is always the same few assets that are prioritized in the end. Generally speaking, there are fewer options than in Modern Warfare.
In conclusion, we have high hopes for the multiplayer aspect of Black Ops Cold War.
