Caleb "McGravy" McGarvey had the honor of receiving the Dennis Hawelka Award. This prize rewards every year the Overwatch League player who had the most positive impact on the community.
The Los Angeles Valiant off-tank succeeds former teammate Scott "Custa" Kennedy and currently Content Creator Pongphop "Mickie" Rattanasangchod.
McGravy's impact was primarily as a team leader but also as a community personality who amplified important social issues.
He knows from experience that being negative leads nowhere. It's this philosophy of life that helped him overcome some difficult moments at the beginning of the 2019 season.
"In the past, I wasn’t always the best person and I didn’t always say the best things and didn’t have the best outlook on things. The community — especially my own community on my stream — has helped me learn that I had a lot of wrong views on things, and about social justice issues. They helped me educate myself and want to give back what the community gave me."
What also makes his strength and the fact that he knows that he's still a work in progress while putting all the necessary energy within his team and on social networks.
His way of thinking has included participating in several charity events on his personal stream or within Los Angeles Valiant.
McGravy may have won the Hawelka Award but his humility will ensure that he will always try to be a better teammate and an even stronger voice for what's important.
