FaZe Clan are the European champions of IEM New York 2020. This year, the competition was split into separate regions due to the pandemic, but this still represents a significant achievement for the European side, who will receive $70,000 and 400 ESL Pro Tour points for their win.

Players in FaZe Clan's CS:GO team could finally end last week with a smile on their faces, following a result that puts an end to the international side's poor run of form. After failing to make it out of pools at CS_summit 6, ESL One Cologne, and in ESL Pro League, the roster had come under question. Faced with criticism over their performance, numerous transfer rumours began to appear out of the woodwork, with the most notable sending Niko to G2.

Yet the international side was able to find the right formula and fans now hope the team can maintain this strong form moving forward. The Dane, Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye, arrived last month and it finally seems like he's found his feet. He was crucial, especially in the first map of the final, a competitive and narrow 22-20 victory after several bouts of overtime. The Danish player saw out the final round with an elite performance: 4 kills in a 3v5 situation, alongside a grenade that would've made Kobe proud.

But aside from the first map, where the two teams were locked head-to-head, the remainder of the final was somewhat disappointing. For a good match, you need two teams, and unfortunately, OG just wasn't up to the task. Even more worrying is the fact that the team led by the Frenchman Nathan "NBK" Schmitt disappeared in the final, losing 3-0. This was a somewhat disappointing result, given that OG had yet to lose a match during the event. The star of the team, Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen, who typically carries the side, was not at his best, finishing the match with a +/- of -20, the worst of any player in the finals.

Teams in Europe can now breathe a bit easier as they wait for the start of DreamHack Open Fall 2020 (15-25 October). Both finalists will be taking part, as will Team Vitality and G2 Esports. The latter two orgs have been struggling for results lately and will doubtless be aiming to change the narrative at the upcoming event. Just like Astralis, who recently took home the ESL Pro League trophy after months of derision, FaZe Clan has proven that they can weather the storm and the international side is now making the most of the smooth sailing ahead.
