The first major offline event of the year saw sixteen of the world's top Street Fighter V players descend upon London to do battle in the Red Bull Kumite. The invitational event, lavishly produced by Gfinity, We Are Collider and Red Bull, and often one of the most hype on the circuit, drew surprises aplenty, with an unlikely champion.
With several Capcom Cup and EVO champions in the field, such as Hajime "Tokido" Taniguchi, Benjamin "Problem X" Simon, and Masato "Bonchan" Takahashi, that Mister Crimson gained revenge for a Group Stage loss against iDom was a supreme effort.
The thrilling 5-4 victory in for Mister Crimson sealed a Kumite double for the AS Monaco star, who also won the Team Tournament held on Saturday evening - incidentally, with iDom as a teammate.
The tournament overall was a triumphant return to offline events for SFV, with epic sets, close results, and several 'underdog' wins along the way. Heavyweights like Bryant "Smug" Huggins, Tokido and Problem X failed to make it out of groups, while seven of the eight quarter-finalists were Western players - despite a quarter of the field being Japanese.
