Originally released in 1996, Quake was developed by the legendary id Software. It didn't take long for this competitive FPS to become an all-time classic in video game history -- inspiring, even now, a host of games in the same genre.
It was also one of the titles that helped kickstart esports.
With 1.8 million copies sold, the first Quake united many fans of the genre. Now, they'll get to relive the magic all over again with a new remaster, which is hoped to attract a whole new audience at the same time.
Although the 2021 version of Quake is intended to be as close to the original game as possible, some significant graphical enhancements have been made. Among them is 4K resolution, reworked 3D models, and better lighting management.
In terms of content, the remastered Quake will feature the entire campaign of the original, as well as all expansions. Naturally there's also multiplayer, which can be either online or local - harkening back to its days as a popular LAN title. The online component will also be cross-platform.
There are also two new expansion packs from MachineGames, developers of the modern Wolfenstein games.
Finally, the game will feature all the original music from its 1996 release, compiosed by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and featuring an all-new track.
The game was dropped unexpectedly yesterday, and is now available on the Microsoft Store, Steam, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo eShop for $9.99.
Players who already owned the original on Steam will receive the remaster for free.
