It's official , the VRR will land on PlayStation 5 this week! In a post , PlayStation teams announced the big news, but also a list of games that will get a patch to accommodate Sony's new feature. Let's go back to this announcement, and to the details of the VRR.
What is VRR?
This is the support for variable refresh rate on PlayStation 5. The new feature of course brings more fluidity to video games , increasing the visual performance of the PS5. How ? Simply by eliminating "visual artifacts" , such as frame rate issues or screen tearing. By synchronizing the refresh rate of the display, the VRR therefore allows players to fully immerse themselves in their gaming experience, without being disturbed by jerky images, or completely buggy horizon loadings.
It will be possible to benefit from it for all the games of the latest console from Sony, although its effectiveness on some depends on the television or the graphics setting of the output device. It is also important to specify that this option works on HDMI 2.1 and VRR compatible screens and televisions.
List of games offering VRR support
The games listed below will soon have a patch to provide VRR support:
- Astro's Playroom
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

PlayStation clarified that this is just a sample of the games that will feature VRR support in the coming days. Also note that it will be possible to deactivate and reactivate the VRR functionality in the console menus for any PS5 game. Those listed above are those that have been specially optimized for the arrival of VRR , but it will be possible to activate it for other video game productions in order to have a smoother rendering.
Enable and disable VRR
VRR will be available through an update to the PS5 console , and will, once installed, be automatically enabled if the console is connected to a VRR compatible TV or display and/or has an HDMI port 2.1. To deactivate it, you will have to go to the system settings, then to the "Screen and video" category, as indicated below.
The VRR system will be deployed this week, to the delight of PS5 players who will therefore be able to benefit from an even smoother gaming experience than it already was. A boon !
