LoL: The strangest sanction in the history of the competition puts a region on fire and blood

A League of Legends team was penalized for swapping accounts, but the prosecution's only evidence was that their player hadn't used certain champions in the past few weeks. An accusation that has raised questions about the integrity of the region.

A professional League of Legends team has been disqualified from their region's promotion tournament for not playing Tristana and Twisted Fate in recent months. This is at least the key argument used by Garena to disqualify the DNS Gaming club during the VCS promotion tournament – the Vietnam Championship Series which gives access to MSI and Worlds. A controversial decision that angered fans around the world and cast suspicion on a region that had already been the subject of many doubts in the past.

A scandal for the League of Legends competition

In addition to a disgraceful sanctioning process with notification at 00:12 (local time) on the day of the game, the reasons for the sanction were unjustified and did not meet the classic "beyond reasonable doubt" . As reported by local media through leaked emails from the aggrieved club owner, the formal accusation against the team was that several players had shared accounts and hinted at the following reasons:

  • DNS Cry (mid laner) played Tristana and Twisted Fate on the mid lane during the tournament after not picking them in the last three months according to his account history.
  • DNS 111 (top), DNS Cry (mid), DNS Nah (ADC) and DNS Rom1 (support) did not verify their accounts

The tournament organizer's decision was so bizarre that the other teams still in contention even considered withdrawing if he didn't rectify the situation. This eventuality, however, has not deterred League of Legends tournament officials in Southeast Asia and Vietnam, who have decided to move forward amid accusations of systematically favoring Genius Esports, the team who benefited from this decision . Despite sporting the fact that they should have been eliminated as a group, they made it to the finals in an attempt to earn a spot in the VCS Summer Split — the final they lost 2-3 to AS Esports. .

Riot Games reached an agreement with Garena for the telecommunications giant to take over the distribution and management of League of Legends in Southeast Asia and lost control of its game in this part of the world. The deal was good for the developers when the title was just launching, but it's an open secret that the studio couldn't regret it any more today. Besides this scandal, Garena has been accused of abusing its dominant position by introducing predatory monetization techniques and acting against the community.
