It has been reported that the first season of the Call of Duty League (CDL) will have fewer events than anticipated due to some of the franchises involved feeling "intimidated" by the schedule.

Call of Duty League: First season to have fewer events

The inaugural season of the Call of Duty League (CDL) is just around the corner. Call of Duty esports has undergone a radical change ahead of the 2020 season, including a packed schedule where each of the twelve franchises involved would host two event weekends throughout the year.

According to Sports Business Journal's Adam Stern, the schedule is going to change due to the return of tournament based play to the CDL.

Starting in London on February 8th-9th, the teams in attendance will compete in a format that is "familiar to the legacy of Call of Duty esports".

Stern also suggests that some franchises that are involved in the Overwatch League and the CDL felt "overwhelmed" at the thought of hosting two homestand events for two separate titles.

The move will mean fewer weekend events throughout the season but there will be more matches over each weekend which is certainly an improvement.

24 events were initially slated for the 2020 CDL season and a revised schedule has yet to be revealed.

The Call of Duty League begins on January 24th, where the Minnesota RØKKR will play host to the first event of the season.

Opinion

More matches are always welcome during an event weekend, especially with Call of Duty. The change in format is certainly a step in the right direction but Overwatch, a game that has no connection with CoD whatsoever, should have NO impact on the number of Call of Duty events that are held during a season.

On the upside, at least Activision Blizzard has changed the format to add a bit more competition to each weekend.
