We don't know yet when the PS5 will be released, or even what its price will be, but persistent rumours seem to reveal what's hidding in the belly of the beast.

PS5 specs apparently leak, backwards compatibility revealed

Available at the end of the year, the PS5 is still a huge mystery for everyone and Sony doesn't seem to be ready to tell more.

There are rumours of a presentation for professionals at CES 2020 on January 6, 2020, while other rumours claim to reveal the technical specifications of the Japanese manufacturer's next console. In the meantime, here are the latest echoes that are currently circulating on this subject.

PS5 Specs

Backwards compatibility

Compatible with all PS4 games

Leaks to be taken seriously as confirmed by the famous Digital Foundry team. According to them, this information would be very credible, as stated in a long paper that even compares the PS5 to the performance of Xbox Series X. We then learn that in the race for teraflops, Microsoft's machine would be more powerful (12 teraflops for the Series X against 9 for the PS5).

PS5: 3 modes, including 2 for backwards compatibility

The Tweaktown site also speak about the specifics revealed by Eurogamer's article, explaining that the PS5 was designed from the start to be an evolutionary machine, which is finally quite consistent with what we saw during this generation with the PS4 and PS4 Pro, or the Xbox One and Xbox One X. The principle of 'generation' of machines should therefore disappear in favor of evolutionary livestock and therefore closer and closer to the PC.

Thus, the PS5 will switch between 3 operating modes, 2 of which are dedicated to PS4 backwards compatibility. More details below :

Mode

Functions

Gen2

Fully unlocks the Navi GPU at 2GHz

for next-gen games

Gen1

Downscales the GPU to 911MHz, 218GB/sec bandwidth,

and 64 ROPs to emulate the PS4 Pro

Gen0

Drops the GPU to 800MHz with 176GB/sec bandwidth

and 32 ROPs to emulate the base PS4

Announced since a long time ago, the backwards compatibility, which was missing on PS4, should make a big comeback on Sony's machine, with full compatibility with old gen titles. Anyway, the more weeks go by, the more details about the hardware embedded in the Xbox Series X and PS5 become available.

Now all we have to do is wait and see if all this data is true... or not!
