If you've opened your Google Play in the last few hours, you must have been struck by a surprisingly arrival in the shop: Fortnite Battle Royale. The game-phenomenon had never had its place in the American giant's online store — since Epic Games had until now always refused to pay the famous 30% tax on in-game microtransactions.
This arm wrestling between the publisher and the download platform had been going on since Summer 2018. Tim Sweeney — Epic Games founder — explained that "the 30 percent store tax is a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games."
Fortnite decided to invent another way to be downloadable for android players, which then takes the form of a classic APK on phones. This was relatively simple to do but was surprising for most players, who are used to Google Play. By giving up on Google, Fortnite has gained greater visibility among android players and may well expand its playerbase even further.
It should be noted that Fortnite's arrival on Google Play doesn't remove the application created by Epic Games.
