As next-gen consoles compete for 4K support, we would have expected the PS5 to natively support the 1440p resolution.
Recent claims by Sony suggest that this is not going to be the case, as the console will only support 1080p and 4K. The 1440p would therefore be simulated by scaling the two supported resolutions. Players with a 1440p screen will end up with reduced graphics.
This limitation could allow Microsoft to gain ground with its Xbox Series S, specifically designed for 1440p, while the X Series will also natively support this resolution.
Note, however, that this issue will affect only a few players, as most PS5 users play on a TV. Only players using a specific 1440p PC screen will be affected.
Despite all this, it's hard to see how the PS5 could suffer in terms of sales or popularity.
