For the second international League of Legends event in a row, Vietnam will not be able to have its representatives compete for a trophy. After the VCS was unable to send its two qualified teams to the World Championship last year, it has now been announced that the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational will have VCS Spring Split champions GAM Esports in attendance.
The reason for GAM Esports' absence are the Vietnamese government-imposed travel restrictions as a result of the ongoing pandemic. While Riot Games allegedly did offer to book a fully private flight to Iceland, GAM Esports' return to Vietnam could not be figured out in due time.
Group A, in which GAM Esports would have competed, will play out as regular with the three remaining teams. The top two teams in the group will advance to the next phase. To ease the pain a little bit, GAM Esports will be awarded a share of the prize money.
