River, the dog who inspired the character of Dogmeat in Fallout 4, passed away in June — but she will never be forgotten. She was more than just an NPC in the game, she became a virtual pet to many of us.
To honor her, Xbox and Bethesday have donated $10,000 to the Montgomery County Human Society and shared a link for anyone who would like to contribute. Montgomery County in Maryland is home to the headquarters of Bethesda Softworks, in Rockville.
Joel Burgess, one of the game's developers and owner of River, praises her as "an extraordinarily kind and patient animal." — he also tweeted about how much of an impact her behaviour had on the creation of the character, like running ahead of her owner but stopping to look back, which created more of a bond between the player and Dogmeat.
