On July 9, a sealed copy of a NES R version of The Legend of Zelda — first produced in 1987 — sold for $870,000 at Heritage Auctions. And now, just a few days later, the record has been broken by none other than Super Mario himself.
According to Kotaku, an unopened copy of Super Mario 64 has just been sold for $1.5 million (1.26 million euros). Despite being one of the best games in history — and the first title to make a successful jump to 3D after many failed attempts — it’s difficult to understand why the game made such a huge amount at auction.
According to the auction house, the copy sold was one of fewer than five copies in such pristine condition — which would explain the high value.
