Our final opinion
This time that's it, we were allowed to tell you all the good things we thought about God of War Ragnarok in a comprehensive test published a few days ago . If it does not revolutionize anything, the second journey of Kratos and Atreus is clearly worth the detour, with an epic of more than 25 hours through the 9 kingdoms of Norse mythology. All the changes to the gameplay do a lot of good for the already well-established formula of God of War 2018, as the title chains epic action-packed sequences. An essential for this end of the year, whether on PS4 or PS5.
history and world
By slaying a god, Atreus and Kratos not only stoked Freya's hatred, they also sparked the Fimbulvetr , the winter that precedes the final battle between all living beings of the 9 realms. This second episode picks up a few years after the events of the first episode, as our duo trains tirelessly to prepare for the famous fight. And we'll stop there on the story, just know that on the narrative side, Ragnarök is very similar to its elder with a lot of dialogue: during the gameplay phases, sometimes depending on the context or your combat exploits, during exploration... And it works very well, because the characters are interesting and make you want to be listened to. On the world side, Santa Monica Studios has already clarified that it will be possible to visit the 9 kingdoms of Norse mythology, unlike the first game. The Fimbulvetr hits everywhere, so expect the places already visited in the first episode have been altered.
Characters
What would a narrative experience worthy of cinema be without a cast of 5-star characters capable of bringing this universe to life? In this new episode, our two friends will cross paths with many Nordic gods, but not only: strange creatures and members of the 11 factions present in the world will mark the journey. In the articles below, we will return to the place of each of the characters revealed in Norse mythology . This should allow you to have some references when you meet them "in real life" in Ragnarök.
Gameplay
- As with everything else in the end, Ragnarök will above all improve the excellent foundations laid in the first game , with a lot of small adjustments that make the fights even more enjoyable. We note a much more lively Kratos, still equipped with his Leviathan Ax and his Blades of Chaos to cut into the quick, but this time the gear can be charged to give access to all new very useful movements to inflict freezing and burning.
- On the exploration and equipment side, we also remain on familiar ground, with dozens of chests of varying value, sometimes well hidden and providing materials and key objects allowing the duo to improve their business. Finally for the completists, you will be delighted to learn that the crows to knock out are still in the game , for hours and hours of additional fun (no).
