After two years of existence, Genshin Impact has succeeded in what most other gatcha games fail to do in the West: infuse hype for the characters over time, month after month. Scaramouche's recent reveal confirms this. Some gamers literally worship the most charismatic heroes in the game. And when you love, you don't count.
The old adage could not be more palpable on Genshin Impact, which surfs on the bursts of hype, and which cracks the “whales”. Very recently, Kotaku carried out an enlightening survey of this category of players. We discover fans "like all the others", except that they have all spent between 5,000 and 90,000 dollars on Genshin Impact .
Ostracized fans
One of the most disturbing elements of Kotaku's vast survey is that the "whales" interviewed overwhelmingly prefer to remain anonymous. They fear being judged by other players, or worse, having their game accounts hacked.
In the West, the "whales" are indeed often criticized by other players. Precisely because they totally fly over the meager rewards granted to free to play players, even when they are diligent.
Victims of monetization?
Kotaku's investigation largely plays down the Whales' big expenses. The site explains that none of the interviewees find themselves in financial distress because of their expenses on Genshin Impact, although these do not necessarily have large salaries.
Kotaku also points out that most whales keep a very critical opinion on the gatcha system. Most of them are aware that this is predatory monetization, and dangerous when you don't know how to manage your budget.
