By mixing the opinion of the editorial staff as well as those of streamers and professional players, we have created a TOP 5 of heroes on Hearthstone Battlegrounds! The list is subject to discussion, and we're curious to get your opinion so feel free to tell us in the comment section below which hero has earned you the most points at the moment.
Will the two new heroes, added with the January 21patch: Tirion Fordring and Millhouse Manastorm, make it to the top?
You can go into more detail with the Battlegrounds stats by RidiculousHat here
Top 1: Yogg-Saron, Hope's End
Yogg-Saron gives you a very powerful early game. His heroic power (recruits a random servant in Bob's tavern and gives him +1/+1) will give you access to improved minions, which is decisive to get the upper hand over your opponents from the start. Moreover, he is the only hero who can recruit a minion (at random of course) for only 2 gold coins. On turn 3, with 5 gold coins in your pocket, you have the possibility to have 2 minions, one of which is upgraded, unlike your opponents who will only have one (unless they decide to sell one!).
To sum up, Yogg-Saron is very strong at the beginning of the game and will greatly increase your chances of having a better mid- and endgame. It will still be frustrating (or enjoyable) to play him because his heroic power is very random.
Tips on how to play Yogg-Saron
- Use your heroic power as much as you can in the early game.
- Try to isolate a minion in the tavern to ensure his selection and improvement.
- In the middle of the game, use it every turn, and remember to sell the minions you acquired at the beginning to level up quickly and speed up your game.
- It will be complex with this hero to start with a precise composition and have optimal synergies. Once your composition is defined, its heroic power will become trivial, and tavern renewals will often be much more useful.
Top 2: Dancin' Deryl
At first glance, Deryl may seem weak, but it's quite the opposite! This hero is extremely powerful and pretty funny to play. However, he remains complex to play. Getting the full benefit of his heroic power will not be easy, especially for a beginner. His passive will randomly improve (+1/+1) the minions of Bob's tavern for every minion sold. For optimal management, isolate the desired minion and the ultra-buffed minion is yours!
A common strategy (highlighted in the RidiculousHat document) with Deryl is to buy all but one of the shop's minions and resell as much as possible to buff the latter.
For example:
5 minions in the tavern, 9 gold available
- Buy 3 minions - 0 gold remaining
- Sell two of your own extra minions, then play and sell one of the minions you just bought - 3 gold coins available
- Buy the fourth minion, leaving just the one you want in the shop...
- Sell the three remaining minions that you bought this round, buy the only remaining buffed minion.
Tips on how to play Deryl
- To make the most of his heroic power, try to obtain Alleycat or Murloc Tidehunter to sell them and their summon and upgrade other minions.
- It is often better to keep minions in your hand to have more value in Bob's next taverns.
- The priority buffed minions are Cave Hydra and Foe Reaper 4000
- Beware of unwanted triples: it can be frustrating to turn your pair of Cobalt Guardians into a single golden copy by accident.
Top 3: Arch-Villain Rafaam
Arch-Villain Rafaam is the perfect hero to get minions by copying those of your opponents.
If you have a good early game, Rafaam will allow you to consolidate your lead. If your early is more difficult then heroic power will give you the opportunity to improve your board by stealing minions. Acquired minions can be used to increase the strength of your board or sold to quickly level up your tavern.
Tips on how to play Rafaam
- Keep in mind that if you don't kill a minion you won't get a copy. This can happen in the first few rounds, so always choose to buy a minion or upgrade your tavern, at least initially.
- Your heroic power is very strong in the middle of the game: use it without moderation!
- Your opponents will have very useful and easily killable servants first (Spawn of N'Zoth, Selfless Hero, Goldrinn the Great Wolf), which you will be able to triple quickly!
- You will have little control over your triples and may end up with Golden Cobalt Guardians quite easily.
Top 4: Nefarian
Nefarian is a perfect counter to the divine shields with his heroic power. He will, therefore, be very powerful in the middle and end game to take the upper hand in a fight.
Your minions with toxicity will be all the stronger in the absence of the opponent's divine shield. The beginning of the game will be the most difficult to manage especially against heroes with heroic power more adapted to the early.
In the middle of the game, it starts to get interesting mainly against Mechs and Murloc who can use many divine shields or the famous George the Fallen.
Tips on how to play Nefarian
- Your heroic power has very little use at the beginning of the game, it is better to build up a good board and level up your tavern.
- To compensate for a weak early start, try to take servants with high stats at level 1 if you don't have access to the Alleycat or the Murloc Tidechaser (Rockpool Hunter, Vulgar Homunculus).
- The further the game progresses, the stronger the heroic power will be: use it every turn at the end of the game!
Top 5 : Edwin VanCleef
Edwin VanCleef offers you a powerful buff at low cost (+1/+1 to a minion for 1 gold coin) . The more minions you buy in a round, the more buff you will get.
The strength of this heroic power is that it is targeted and will be very useful to improve the minion of your choice, especially those who are usually difficult to buff. This can be used to protect your key minions like Baron Rivendare, Scavenging Hyena or a Mama Bear with a few extra health points.
Tips on how to play Edwin VanCleef
- Its early impact is very low - wait until you have 10 gold coins to get the most out of it.
- The buff is permanent, so don't hesitate to use it on your key minions throughout the game to get the edge on your opponents!
