Now is the time to focus on Hearthstone's most popular tribe: the Murlocs. Here's a guide that will help you play with the amphibian archetype in Battlegrounds, thanks to the synergies and the best cards that compose it.

Hearhtstone Battlegrounds: Our Guide to Murloc compositions

In Battlegrounds, just like it did in Hearthstone, the Murloc archetype is going through a delicate period since the removal of the Nightmare Amalgam. Many players are put off by the difficulties of setting up a good composition. However, Murlocs are still extremely fearsome and if you can tame them, they can take out any hero with any board.

General Strategy

In itself, it's not very complicated to play Murlocs. The problem is whether you will be lucky enough to have the right minions at the right time.

Murloc is the archetype with the least number of creatures — only nine, including five in the first 2 levels of the tavern alone.

As a result, their small number doesn't guarantee you'll find them every time. So your priority won't be to level up but to compose a board full of murlocs that you can combine together, notably by sacrificing the weakest ones to roll a maximum and find the ones that will be most useful to you.

Early game

There is still a good chance of finding a Murloc right from the start as there are three of them in the first pool. The best of them is undoubtedly the Murloc Tide Hunter. It will allow you on turn 3 to purchase two minions by sacrificing the Murloc Scout.

If these two minions are the Murloc Tidecaller and the Rockpool Hunter, you will have made the best start. Thus, you will have your level 2 tavern and three Murlocs who are just waiting for one thing: the Murloc Warleader.

This one will be your first buff to win your duels during the early game. Even if the Murloc Tidecaller can grow quickly, the Murlocs lack overall attack power. As a consequence, the Murloc Warleader is the essential card to survive the early and mid game. The Old Murk-eye will give you good firepower without necessarily needing a buff — just a board full of murlocs. Don't hesitate to take a Spawn of N'zoth which will boost your still weak murlocs.

Mid game

Once you've filled the board with murlocs, you'll have only one watchword: buff.

You'll spend most of your time giving your murlocs the maximum boost. Triple the Warleader and play several Coldlight Seer to keep your board going. Don't miss out on Toxfin, it will allow you to give Toxicity to any of your murlocs. This exclusive feature of the murloc tribe is the one that your opponents will fear the most because no matter how powerful your opponent's minions are, they will still die.

On the other hand, the archetype doesn't include any minions with Taunt. Fortunately, the Defender of Argus is there to prevent you from losing your Murloc Warleader on an unfortunate focus.

Also, don't delay in leveling up your tavern. Don't linger on level 3 and 4 because the murlocs available in late game are the ones that make the difference. Don't hesitate either to form triples at level 4 to have a chance to find the only Tier 5 minion that will give you a good chance to reach the top 4: Brann Bronzebeard.

Late game

You cannot contemplate victory without Brann. Finding him must be an obsession. His ability to double Battlecries is decisive — especially with late-game minions such as King Bagurgle and Primalfin Lookout.

The latter can offer you triples very easily. It's not uncommon for a Triple King Bagurgle to be found thanks to him. Finally, the last level of the tavern will give you access to the Gentle Megasaur. This minion is completely broken if combined with Brann Bronzebeard.

For example, you can have a Divine Shield/Toxicity combo. If you are lucky enough to recruit him more than once, Windfury combined with the Divine Shield/Toxicity is the ultimate synergy to finish off your opponents.

Hearthstone

As you will have understood, the common thread of your strategy is to use all the means at your disposal to boost your murlocs. Recruit Brann Bronzebeard, chain Battlecries and the gates of victory will open to you!

Whelp. Through saving some of my golds until I was Tavern 5 to force discover Tavern 6 minions, the first I got was Señor Splashymech, the second was Kangor's Apprentice, the Third was Holy Mackerel, and finally the fourth was to adapt my Murlocs. I was barely hanging on by a thread at this point, and I should have known it wasn't going to be good by the time I finally achieved my goal...

My adaptations were a choice of +1/+1, +3 ATK, or Deathrattle: Summon two +1/+1 plants

My next opponent had adapted Murlocs with poison and divine shield. D:
Needless to say, I took a long walk off a short pier.

I've been trying to figure out the Murloc strategy since my first battlegrounds run. I could never get enough stats to make it any good after turn 7 or 8, so I gave up on the strategy; and the only time I would play a Murloc was in a menagerie run.

About half an hour ago I decided to pick Flurgi and force myself to try mulocs again. I hurredly searched Google for "how to play murlocs in battlegrounds," and, through this article, I found the mistake I was making this whole time. I just needed to place more importance on tiering up quickly and finding Brann - he wasn't at the top of my priorities in my previous runs.

Just secured my first win with murlocs. Thank you for this guide!
