Elden Ring is full of more or less annoying dragons, and Adula is clearly among the most annoying of the lot, especially since you have good reason to want to kill it, especially if you play a Sorcerer. An interesting detail is that Adula serves Ranni the witch, you will necessarily meet him when you complete his questline, but you do not need to kill him.
Adula Location
Like some of his colleagues, Adula will be encountered several times. The first time is right after defeating Loretta, Royal Knight, at Caria Manor. Continuing northwest of Liurnia, you will come to the 3 Sisters , 3 shardstone towers. And it is there that Adula, the shardstone dragon, is found. It is however impossible to kill it, it is a low level version which will disappear automatically at 50% life.
To find Adula and kill him, you will have to progress almost to the end of Ranni's quests. After defeating Astel and ascending to the Lunar Altar, south of Liurnia, Adula will appear in your path if you attempt to enter Manus Celes Cathedral through the main door. You don't have to kill him to complete Ranni's questline.
Preparations
- It is possible to use a spirit summon for this fight.
- A talisman that significantly reduces magic damage, along with a lot of life, can save you from being instantly killed in one hit.
- This dragon has significant resistances to all types of physical and elemental damage, even lightning and holy. Its only vulnerability is to piercing damage. It's not a surprise, but his resistance to magic damage is titanic, it is better to use other spells like the Sling, if you play wizard.
- Its resistances to afflictions are also very high, but not insurmountable. Poison, Scarlet Rot, Bleeding, Freezing, all conventional afflictions work, but not the rest.
Fight
- You should be used to facing dragons by this point in the game, at least in the serious encounter the second time around. This may vary depending on your build, but in general it's best to face it on horseback. A tried-and-true technique is to charge at it, kick its legs and wings a few times, then run behind it to avoid its counterattack. This helps prevent flips, tail swipes, blasts, etc.
- This dragon has the conventional attacks of its species, such as a large blast on the ground, another diagonal blast when flying, etc. He also uses different physical attacks. By far the most dangerous is the spinning tail swipe which you can avoid by moving at the right time between its legs, or by moving far away.
- There are two abilities to really be wary of, the first is the homing crystal blast. He will make a crystal ball appear in front of his mouth, after a few seconds it will explode and they will hunt you down with deadly precision. There are several ways to dodge them, on horseback, the easiest is to hide behind the big rock in the area. Turning behind the boss is sometimes enough to make them go the wrong way, but that's not an option if you're in front of him. Dismounting then rolling into the crystals at the last moment allows you to dodge them, if your timing is right.
- This dragon's deadliest technique is the one named after it: Adula's Moonblade. It flies away, but instead of blowing, it will turn its head sideways and then descend with the huge blade in its mouth. He will smash to the ground sweeping the entire area with the blade, dealing immense damage and causing freezing. You can either go under the dragon and behind it, or go down the slope so that you are much lower than it when it lands, the blade will then sweep far above your head.
