Unsurprisingly, Fortnite remains the most profitable game of the year, with revenue reaching $1.8 billion for 2019. The year previously, the Epic Games title set a record with $2.4 billion income, according to research firm SuperData.
Despite a 25% decline, the game still leads the video game market. With mobile gaming reaching a record $64.4 billion revenue, combined with the fact that the game is free-to-play, Fortnite isn't about to fall off its perch.
Why is Fortnite so popular? Simple — the sheer amount of content released every day. The game touches relatively young players, who above all seek novelty.
Monetization through battle passes and a vast number of collaborations — Marvel’s Avengers, Stranger Things, Batman, and, more recently, Star Wars to name a few — have managed to convert casual players into spenders:
"While Fortnite has fewer players than League of Legends, Fortnite players on PC are more than twice as likely to spend on in-game content as the League of Legends audience."
Epic Games' battle royale topped all free-to-play games — representing 80% of the total digital games market for the year — thanks to the stabilization of its revenue in 2019.
Ahead of games such as League of Legends, Candy Crush Saga, or Pokémon GO, Fortnite still has a bright future ahead of it.
All that remains is to see what Epic Games has planned following the successful release of Chapter 2 Season 1.
