Announced in 2019, a multiplayer online experience based on Tolkien's legendary franchise has been in the works by Amazon Games. The company, which opened a new studio recently, was developing a Lord of the Rings MMO with Chinese studio Leyou Technologies Holdings.
However, the project has been cancelled. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Chinese studio was purchased by Tencent last December. After this event, Amazon couldn't close a deal with Tencent, causing the cancellation. "We have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time,” says the report.
At the moment, the only LoTR game being developed is Gollum (you can watch its gameplay reveal here).
