Like its predecessor, DOOM Eternal will not only offer a single-player campaign, but will also give you the opportunity to happily take down other online players. Presented at E3, BATTLEMODE received an extended demo at PAX East with Executive Producer Marty Stratton and Game Director Hugo Martin.
The concept is simple — one player at the controls of the powerful DOOM Slayer against two giant demons, also controlled by players. If the DOOM Slayer dies, he loses, but for him to win, the two demons must both be slain. When a demon has been killed, it reappears after a short while. You'll need to have good tactics and execute them well to win in this asymmetrical match.
The DOOM Slayer has a complete arsenal right from the start, with mods and powers. He is also the only one who can use teleporters and special elements on the map. This makes him quite powerful, but the demons are not without their strengths. In addition to their race-specific attacks (a bit like a class system) they have special powers that they can activate. These include:
- Summoning other demons as reinforcements.
- Block the spawning of loot when the DOOM Slayer kills a demon (including chainsaw attacks).
- Summoning smoke to camouflage other demons.
- Summon danger zones that inflict damage to the DOOM Slayer.
The game is played in 5 rounds to determine the winner. When Doom Eternal is released on March 20th on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Stadia, 6 maps will be available as well as 5 demon races. Free content is expected to be added to the game in the future.
DOOM Eternal: Available demons
- The Revenant: An agile demon with a double rocket launcher. It can unleash a barrage of long-range projectiles. It is, however, fragile enough.
- The Pain Elemental: An advanced version of the Cacodemon. The fact that it can fly gives it the advantage to attack and monitor the area. It also has a shield to avoid being shot down. But it is very vulnerable when it is recharging.
- The Mancubus: A tank with lots of life, two cannons, two flamethrowers, and a smoke bomb for camouflage. However, it lacks mobility.
DOOM Eternal comes to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 20, 2020.
