Borderlands 3: take a look at skills with diamonds, chevrons and hexagons

We will guide you through the new features of Borderlands 3 classes. This article reviews the generalities that apply to all classes in the new Gearbox game. For all the specificities related to a certain character, consult the appropriate class guides.

The new features

For the Skill Tree

If we go into a little more detail about Borderlands 3's skill trees, here's what we know:

  • The improvements (Action Skill Augment), the modifications of Action Skills and the Elemental improvements correspond to the three new forms of the game: chevrons, hexagons and diamonds.
  • These improvements, basic improvements and changes in Action Skills are free for all characters. To unlock them, simply reach the line for them in the desired skills tree. Once unlocked, they can all be freely equipped. All you have to do is put them in an empty space provided for this purpose.

The new forms

Diamonds

Diamonds are exclusive to Amara and Fl4k, they change the element of their Action Skill. So these are basic improvements. For Fl4k, it is more a kind of change in the type of pet that accompanies it.

Chevrons

Chevrons are improvements, they add new effects or liabilities to a character's Action Skill. The Action Skill to be modified must be in the same tree as the chevrons used.

Hexagons

Hexagons are modifications, they completely change the way Action Skills work.

Borderlands 3

For class mods

It seems that the class mods work differently from the previous games. If we refer to the images below, the class mods will always allow us to exceed the point limit of a passive skill in our tree. In addition, these new class mods seem to unlock unique skills that would not otherwise be known. That's very interesting.

The classics

The following elements have not changed compared to the previous games:

The squares

The other shapes of the tree are squares. These are the passive improvements of the character as in the other Borderlands. They have ranks, so you can put 1, 3 or 5 points depending on the skill. Finally, it is always necessary to use 5 points in one line of the tree in order to unlock the next line and move forward in the skill tree you want.
