FUT 20: Understanding Team Chemistry

Ultimate Team is based on teamwork and cohesion between players, summed up by the Chemistry statistic. The way Chemistry works hasn't changed in FIFA 20, but just to be sure, here is a reminder of the basics of Team Chemistry in FUT, and its impact on the gameplay.

FUT 20: Understanding Team Chemistry

If you are familiar with FIFA 20's FUT mode, then there is no need to explain how important Team Chemistry is to achieving the best possible results. If you need a little reminder to get the season off to a good start, then read this quick explanation before scrolling on to our more in-depth explanations.

Three colours, one goal

Team Chemistry is crucial to get the most out of your players during your games. Of course, if you are a beginner, you will not be able to reach the maximum Chemistry (100) immediately, but don't worry.

FIFA 20

To achieve 100 Chemistry, you will need to connect your 11 players using green or orange links. Don't forget, if no connection can be made between two players, a red link will appear. The colour of the links depends on three variables: club, league and nationality.

As you can see in the image above:

  • Green link: requires two of the above attributes in common between two players. Significantly improves Player Chemistry and therefore Team Chemistry.
  • Orange link: requires one attribute in common between two players. Slightly improves Player Chemistry and therefore also the Team Chemistry.
  • Red link: appears when two players have no common attributes and impacts Player Chemistry as well as the Team Chemistry.

There are also perfect links, which are bright green in colour and are not mentioned in these bullet points. These consist of having two players of the same nationality, playing for the same club and therefore in the same league. These links offer the strongest Player Chemistry bonus and can allow you to compensate for several red links.

Player Chemistry

Your players also have a Player Chemistry statistic, which contributes to Team Chemistry but also determines the value of the "boost" provided by Chemistry Style cards. Player Chemistry is given a value from 1 to 10, determined by several criteria: preferred position, links to other players, the choice of coach (bonus represented by a green tie once active) and finally the loyalty bonus (represented by a green coat of arms when it is awarded).

The latter applies when your players accumulate ten appearances on the field or if your players are "first owners", i.e. if you have packed them and not purchased them from the Transfer Market.

The impact of Team Chemistry

The measurable impact of Team Chemistry on players during games has traditionally been unclear. However, since last year, EA Sports has clarified the situation by providing details of the statistics affected by both Player Chemistry and Team Chemistry.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has a Player Chemistry of 9 with green links playing at CAM, so he gets a +4 boost to his stats. - FIFA 20

Joe Gomez has a Player Chemistry of 2 when playing as a lone striker, with green and red links, so his stats suffer for it. - FIFA 20

As you can see above, by accessing the "Attribute Details" tab of one of your players, you will now be able to see the positive or negative impact of Chemistry on your player's statistics. The attributes affected by these bonuses and penalties will depend on the Chemistry Style applied to the player.

Only pre-match Chemistry is important

Making changes in a game will not impact your players' Chemistry, they keep their pre-game values no matter what. That is why, as many professional FIFA players do, it is recommended to create a team with a formation that allows you to field players that you can then use in different positions once the game has begun. This is easiest to achieve through the use of customized tactics as shown in the example below:

Team Chemistry is 100 pre-match (note the multiple green links allowing Moses in the team without negatively impacting Team Chemistry). - FIFA 20

Changing the formation, or making substitutions, will not affect your players' Team Chemistry boosts. - FIFA 20

Now you know all the tips and tricks to make Team Chemistry work for you, it's time to compose your dream eleven.
