EA leaks personal details of 1,600 FIFA 20 Global Series players

Players looking to register for the FIFA 20 Global Series were in for a surprise yesterday, as their data may have been leaked. When registering, players were prompted to verify their EA account details, but many found details belonging to other players.

FIFA 20 Global Series players found details of random other players during the registration process. Players' email address, EA ID, country of residence, and date of birth were leaked.

Former FIFA esports manager of North and Hashtag United George Hughes posted a screenshot of his registration, with the information blocked out.

Own goal.

EA says it "took action to shut down the site by 1:30pm UK Time," half an hour after registration went live. However, an estimated 1,600 players may have been affected by the data breach.

In a statement on Twitter, EA Sports confirm they have fixed the problem, although registration has not yet been reopened.

This is a significant data breach, and although EA are"taking steps to contact those competitors with more details and protect their EA accounts," this is a big misstep.

EA is "confident that players will not see the same issue again," but why did they see it in the first place?

Players will be notified when registration goes back online.
