Chapter 14 of Final Fantasy VII Remake can be completed very quickly if you just follow the main quest. Behemoth and Leviathan are optional bosses, but the mandatory boss is the second round against Abzu, whom you faced in Chapter 10. Your group is a little different this time, since it is made up of Cloud, Barret and Tifa.
Planning & Materia
- You normally start the fight with your life and mana to the maximum. Optimize your equipment and Materia before entering the Don's hideout.
- Abzu is still vulnerable to fire . We advise you to equip the Materia with basic affinity for the character you intend to control, and to link it to a Fire Materia. Make sure that everyone in the group has an equipped Fire Materia in order to have a ranged attack option.
- Ifrit's summon will be by far the most useful on this boss.
- Poison is no longer a significant threat in this fight, however having AoE abilities can help you get rid of Abzu's Shoats.
Boss Abilities
Unsurprisingly, Apsu retains the majority of its attacks. He loses his ability to summon and detonate puddles, but gains other techniques instead.
- Tailspin: A 360 ° whirlwind with a fairly large range. Destroying Abzu's tail, which can be targeted independently, will prevent it from using it afterwards.
- Backwash Spout: When he jumps high, Abzu will release a large amount of sewer water via the 2 pipes on the wall. The water forms a whirlpool, so you will be sheltered in the middle of the room and in the center, but not if you are close to the opposite wall.
- Shoats: Many Shoats will be present at the start of the fight, and reinforcements will be called in each phase. They hurt a lot, but they don't have much life, so track them down and kill them before coming back to Abzu. This can be difficult at the start of the fight, since they flee between the crates, but after that it should be pretty simple.
Combat
- The combat is quite similar to that of Chapter 10, although you may find it easier if you have done all the quests and farmed a bit. Start by doing a little housekeeping and eliminating the Shoats present. Make it your priority every time they spawn.
- Abzu has several body parts that can be targeted independently. As mentioned above, it is best to start at the tail to make melee combat easier for your group. Barret and his Big Berthaa is particularly suited for this role with Maximum Fury, its triangle attack and a Fire Materia.
- Next is Abzu's remaining horn: destroying it should stagger him, which will allow you to inflict him huge damage.
