In an official statement accompanying the tweet below, Square Enix says shipments of Final Fantasy VII Remake have been 'a lot,' while a press release stated digital sales in particular were 'exceptional.'
According to MCV, reporting on data from Famitsu, this included a Japanese launch figure of 702,853. This also helps explain the spike in PS4 hardware sales in the same region.
Other data from analyst suggests that Final Fantasy VII Remake shipped less than its stablemate Final Fantasy XV, yet this appears to be a direct result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic affecting physical distribution and sales.
According to PSN tracking site Gamstat, there were at least 2.3m users of Final Fantasy VII in the period to 12 April, helping to support the massive figures.
Either way, it appears to be a highly successful launch for Square Enix, who are clearly happy with the performance. There's also no doubt that they will see a further increase in sales once Remake's one-year exclusivity on PlayStation ends, with the game most likely coming to both Xbox One and PC.
