Welcome to our step-by-step walkthrough of your Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl adventure!
There have been several changes made since the original titles released in 2006, so this new walkthrough aims to guide you through Sinnoh without missing a single thing.
Cycling down Route 206
Now that you have your Bike, take the southern exit in Eterna City. In the exit building, an NPC will give you three Sky Stickers B.
You'll also bump into the Professor's assistant, who will give you a Rare Candy.
Now head onto the Cycling Road. You'll blast down it at speed, and automatically to boot, but you should take the time to backpedal and take on any Trainers that you miss.
At the bottom of the Cycling Road you'll see another connecting building, where a blonde girl will give you three Stickers B in exchange for showing her your Bike.
You're now on the lower section of Route 206.
Route 206
Pokémon found on Route 206:
- Bronzor
- Geodude
- Kricketot (Morning)
- Kricketune
- Ponyta
- Stunky (Diamond only)
- Zubat (Night)
If you head up the right side of the Cycling Road, you'll see a pair of trees that can be Cut.
Head north, keeping an eye out for the partially-hidden tree that can be Cut - you'll find a Full Heal behind it.
Across the small wooden bridge you can pass under the Cycling Road. You'll find a Super Repel in the gap just left of the Honey Tree, and if you continue left then north, four Rawst Berries.
Head right under the Cycling Road, and north into the tall grass.
Navigating around a couple of boulders, you'll bump into Hiker Theodore.
If you continue north from Theodore you'll come to the entrance to the Wayward Cave.
You'll need Flash to be able to traverse the cave, so return once you've acquired it.
Note: It is possible to obtain Flash at this point in the story - simply use Rock Smash on the left side of Oreburgh Gate, and head down to B1F where you'll find it in a Poké Ball.
If you go left under the Cycling Road from Theodore, you'll find a Poison Barb.
Under this section of the Cycling Road, if you hug the northern 'wall', you'll also find the hidden entrance to the Wayward Cave.
You'll need to return after you've gained the ability to use Strength outside of battle.
For now, however, return to the base of the Cycling Road and head right onto Route 207.
Route 207
Pokémon found on Route 207:
- Bibarel
- Geodude
- Kricketune
- Kricketot (Morning/Night)
- Machop
- Magikarp (using Rod)
- Meditite
- Psyduck
- Zubat
You'll bump into Dawn, who will give you two Key Items.
The Vs. Seeker allows you to find rematches with the Trainers you battle on the various Routes, while the Dowsing Machine is a kind of radar system for hidden items.
To use the Dowsing Machine, bring up the Pokétch fully using the R Button. When you press A over a section, it will send out a pulse. If you see a dot appear, that's an item to be picked up!
One notch on the grid roughly corresponds to one step, so it's a narrow field of view.
Collect the fruit of the Oran Berry, Bluk Berry, and Cheri Berry trees to the left of the exit from the Cycling Road, and head right onto the Route proper.
Heading down the mud slide here puts you on the road back to Oreburgh City - useful if you need to heal up after all those trainer battles.
You'll find a Poké Ball in the tall grass, as well as a hidden second Poké Ball that can be detected with the Dowsing Machine.
To get back up the mud slide, simply switch into high gear on your Bike using the B Button, and ride up it.
Head east along Route 207.
You'll face several trainers along the way.
Between the pair of Anthony and Lauren and Hiker Justin you'll find a Super Potion.
However, before you head into Mt. Coronet, take the narrow pathway south of the Honey Tree.
You can battle three Trainers - Youngster Austin, Hiker Kevyn, and Battle Girl Helen.
You can also pick up a Dire Hit and a hidden Rare Candy near Kevyn.
Mt. Coronet (Entrance)
Pokémon found in Mt. Coronet (Entrance)
- Chingling (Rare)
- Cleffa (Very Rare, Day/Night)
- Geodude
- Machop
- Meditite (Rare)
- Magikarp (via Old Rod)
- Barboach (via Good Rod)
Enter Mt. Coronet, where you'll bump into Cyrus rushing down the stairs. The leader of Team Galactic, he spouts off about Pokémon and the universe before dashing off.
There's nothing much you can do here just yet, so head up the stairs, round the central area, and down the second set of stairs.
However, we do recommend trying to catch a Meditite here. It's a strong Fighting/Psychic-type Pokémon who is significantly stronger than Machop due to its Pure Power ability, which doubles its Attack stat. It's worth catching the rare Chingling too, which evolves into Chimecho.
Head south and exit Mt. Coronet to Route 208.
Route 208
Pokémon found on Route 208:
- Bidoof
- Bibarel
- Machop
- Meditite
- Psyduck
- Zubat
- Magikarp (via Old Rod)
- Barboach (via Good Rod)
Heading over the bridge, you'll face Hiker Robert.
At the intersection, head north across the bridge to face Black Belt Kyle.
After you've defeated him, head down the stairs for an X Speed.
Return to Hiker Robert, then east over the bridge. You'll need to take on Hiker Jonathan.
Head north, and break the rocks to the left with Rock Smash. Down the stairs you'll see a Poké Ball.
Go east, and down the stairs into the tall grass. Prepare to face Aroma Lady Hannah.
Outside the Berry Master's House you can claim two Nanab Berries, two Razz Berries, two Bluk Berries, and two Pinap Berries.
Inside, the Berry Master will give you a free Berry. You can come back to claim a new, random berry each day. The woman also sells a selection of berries for 80 Pokédollars each.
Back outside, you'll have to take on Artist William.
You'll spot a Honey Tree in the tall grass. To the left you can claim some Honey, while partially hidden to the right you can talk to the NPC for the Odd Keystone.
Head through the connecting building to enter Hearthome City.
Hearthome City
As soon as you enter Hearthome City you'll run into a Buneary, followed by Keira. She'll tell you to come visit her at the Super Contest Hall.
A Fisherman just beyond will offer to guide you to the Hall, so agree and save some time.
Outside, you'll meet Fantina, the Hearthome City Gym Leader. After a chat, head inside where you'll meet Keira, who gives you an Ethereal Sticker C, and your mother, who scolds you and gives you a Tuxedo or a Dress.
A man will also give you a Mild Poffin.
There's not much you can do in the city right now, but it's still worth having a look around.
To the left of the Hall, if you go behind the fence, you can find a hidden Tiny Mushroom.
If you head back to where you spoke to the Fisherman guide, you can enter the building with the orange roof. This is the Pokémon Fan Club building. Inside, the rather braggard Fan Club Chairman will give you the Poffin Case.
The woman will assess the Friendship of your lead Pokémon, and if it's high, she'll give you the Best Friends Ribbon for that Pokémon.
For more on Friendship, check out this guide.
In the tall building to the right of the Pokémon Fan Club, head up to the second floor and speak to the green-haired man for a Shell Bell.
The building to the left of the Poké Mart is the Poffin House, where you can now make Poffins given you have a Poffin Case.
In the house to the right of the Pokémon Center, you can speak to Bebe. She created the PC Box system you use to store your catches.
Head north from here into Amity Square, where the receptionist will explain that you can take a 'cute' Pokémon out for a walk.
For more on the Amity Square, how to get a Pokémon to follow you, and some important items to be picked up, check out our dedicated guide using the link below.
When you leave the Amity Square, the receptionist will explain that your Pokémon wants to follow you.
Head to the far south of town to bump into Barry. It's time for another rival battle...
Given you can't take on the Hearthome Gym just yet, head east out of town.
Just before the Route 209 entrance building you'll meet a Hiker, who will give you a Happiny Egg. Make sure you have space in your party.
Route 209
Pokémon found on Route 209:
- Bibarel
- Bonsly (Pearl-only)
- Chansey (Very Rare)
- Gastly (Rare, Night)
- Goldeen (via Good Rod)
- Magikarp (via Old Rod)
- Mime Jr. (Diamond-only, Very Rare)
- Starly
- Staravia
- Zubat (Rare, Night)
As soon as you enter Route 209 you'll have to battle Pokémon Breeder Albert.
Head into the tall grass here to find some Honey in the top right.
On the lower wooden jetty, a Fisherman will give you the Good Rod. Now you'll be able to catch more than just Magikarp whenever you fish!
At the junction, head north and then west to pick the Berries from the trees. A trainer here will give you some Flora Stickers E.
Head back down and make your way east, battling past some more Trainers.
Head south from Poké Kid Danielle and work your way around to find an X Accuracy.
Now head across the north bridge, and battle another Trainer.
Next to the Honey Tree you'll find a hidden Super Potion, while down the stairs here there's a hidden Tiny Mushroom. Remember to use your Dowsing Machine to find them easily!
To the east, before the path turns north, you'll see a strange silver-and-bronze structure. This is the Hallowed Tower. If you have encountered at least 32 different NPCs in the Grand Underground, you'll be able to drop your Odd Keystone in here.
This is a prerequisite for finding Spiritomb later, so we'd advise you to head below ground and get that done!
Head north and collect some more Berries. If you head down into the pit and check the rock to the right, you'll find an Awakening.
Make your way through the tall grass to the left, down into the pit, and up the other side with your Bike for a Calcium.
Head back down and round to face some more Trainers.
To the right you'll see TM47 Steel Wing behind a tree that can be Cut.
Now, head into the tall grey tower.
The Lost Tower
Pokémon found in the Lost Tower:
- Gastly
- Zubat
- Golbat (2F and upwards)
- Murkrow (Diamond-only)
You can collect several items as you climb the tower. There's an Oval Stone on 2F, a Revive in the south-west corner of 3F, a Great Ball and TM27 Low Sweep on 4F.
Make your way to the top, battling the trainers on the way.
On the top floor, you'll encounter a pair of old ladies. One will give you a Cleanse Tag, and the other TM96 Strength - a key tool in progressing and another ability for your Pokétch. However, you'll need a few more Gym Badges before you can use it.
Exit the tower, and then continue north into Solaceon Town.
Solaceon Town
There's not a lot to do in Solaceon Town, but there is one thing that should interest you - the Pokémon Nursery in the north east.
Here you'll be able to leave up to two Pokémon for a fee, and they'll grow in experience while you're away. There's even the possibility of the pair laying an Egg.
Before you reach the Nursery, a man near the Pokémon Center will give you the Pokémon History app for your Pokétch. This tool displays all the Pokémon you have obtained during your adventure.
In the house to the right of the Pokémon Center, you'll find the reporter from the Pokémon News Press. The man here will ask to see a different Pokémon each day. You'll receive three of a random Poké Ball for your efforts.
Next to the Poké Mart you can pick some Persim Berries, Nanab Berries, and Figy Berries.
Take the right path behind the northernmost green-roofed house. There are three routes south here - the first takes you to a house where a lady will talk about your lead Pokémon's nature.
The second leads you to the Ball Capsule Boy's house. He's not here at the moment, we'll come back to him in a second.
The third leads you to the Solaceon Ruins.
Solaceon Ruins
Inside the Ruins, you'll come across the Ball Capsule Boy. He's looking for Unown, the alphabet-based Pokémon that inhabit these ruins. He'll run back home, leaving you instructions to visit him when you've caught some.
On the back wall you'll see a message in Unown symbols. These are instructions on which exits to take to reach the main chamber below: top right, lower left, top right, top left, top left, lower left.
As you make your way down, you'll come across a Trainer to battle.
Catching Unown
There are twenty-eight Unown you can catch in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl - one for each letter of the alphabet, plus the ! and ? punctuation marks.
Our dedicated guide will help you catch them all, and reveal just what you get for your efforts.
Once you reach the main chamber on the bottom floor, you'll find a Nugget, a Rare Candy, a Mind Plate, and an Odd Incense.
You'll also see another message on the wall:
Friendship - all lives touch other lives to create something anew and alive.
Very profound.
Leave the ruins, and continue with your journey by heading north out of town onto Route 210.
Now is the time to continue your adventure north, towards Route 210.
Route 210 (South)
Pokémon found on Route 210 (South):
- Ponyta
- Chansey (Rare)
- Geodude
- Kricketune
- Mime Jr. (Diamond-only, Rare)
- Bonsly (Pearl-only, Rare)
To the right as you enter the Route you'll find some Berries growing on trees.
If you head up the dirt path and head right, then cross the bridge onto the raised area, a boy here will give you TM51 Roost.
In the patch of tall grass just left of the Honey Tree, your Dowsing Machine will pick up a hidden Great Ball.
Taking the western route to the top left, through some tall grass and past a couple of trainers, you'll find another Great Ball.
Route 210 is full to the brim of Trainers for you to battle. Take the opportunity to boost your team's levels.
If you continue north, you'll come to a large building. This is the Café Cabin. To the left there's an army of Psyducks blocking your way, so head inside the café.
You can do battle with some of the patrons, while you can purchase Moomoo Milk from the waitress on the right.
Once you're done with the Café Cabin, leave and head east onto Route 215.
Route 215
Pokémon found on Route 215:
- Abra (Rare)
- Kadabra (Rare)
- Geodude
- Ponyta
- Kricketune (Rare)
Head north, over the bridge, then double back south. After defeating Ruin Maniac Calvin, pick up the Ether, and keep heading east.
Head south and up onto the rocky outcrop. Speak to the Black Belt to get three copies of TM66 Payback, then head north over the bridge. Where you see three flowers on the island, check the middle one for a hidden jar of Honey.
Go west, back down to ground level. You'll battle Black Belt Derek.
Cut the tree down and continue heading east to battle Black Belt Gregory. Pick up the Fist Plate afterwards.
Cut the tree to the south for some Pecha Berries and Bluk Berries, then take the stairs. Going south across the bridge leads to a Guard Spec.
Head north and back down to ground level. Above the ridge you'll see another tree that can be cut - just above it is a hidden Hyper Potion.
Battle past the Black Belt Nathaniel. In the tall grass, there's a hidden Zinc in the northeast.
Cut down the trees and pick up the TM34 Shock Wave behind them.
Heading south-west will bring you to a Full Heal, before returning east and battling the Ace Trainer pair, Dennis and Maya.
Finally, head down the stairs, pick the Berries, and enter Veilstone City.
Veilstone City
You can't enter the Galactic Warehouse yet, as a couple of goons will block your path. For now, just explore the town and pick up the many items on offer.
There's a lot to be gained from a visit to the Department Store. Before you enter, pick up the Revive to the left.
1F - Trainer Zone
The old lady on the ground floor will give you 3 Fire Stickers B.
This floor is like a general Poké Mart, selling Potions, Poké Balls, Repels and the like.
2F - Battle Collection
The cashier at the bottom of the three will give you the Counter app for your Pokétch. This is basically a tally counter, and is a key app for those who enjoy shiny hunting.
The other two sell battle items such as X Attacks, and Pokémon stat boosting items such as Protein and HP Up.
3F: TM Corner
The bottom cashier sells offensive TMs such as Thunder, while the top cashier sells more defensive TMs.
We highly recommend picking up a few copies of TM54 False Swipe. This is a crucial move in catching Pokémon, as it will always leave them with a minimum of 1HP, no matter how overpowered your Pokémon are compared to the wild Pokémon.
4F: Pedestal Floor
The two cashiers here will sell a variety of Pedestals for your Secret Base.
5F: Rooftop Plaza
The 'buff guy' on the right will give you the Sticky Barb held item, which damages enemy Pokémon when you're hit with a physical attack.
You'll find the Style Shop to the south of the city, where you can purchase new outfits for your Trainer, or change into any you already own. Unlike Sword & Shield, you can only equip full outfits, not component parts.
South of the Style Shop you'll see a girl in a white and pink hat. Talk to her about her lost scarf. It's found north of the Girafarig, just before the stairs up to the Galactic Veilstone Building, hidden behind a tree. Talk to her again and she'll let you keep the Silk Scarf.
There's no point going into the Galactic Building just now, but you'll find a PP Up to the left of it.
Speak to the trainer with the Girafarig for the Metronome, a held item that boosts the power of a move each time if it's used repeatedly.
To the west of the Style Shop, up some stairs, you'll see a bald man in a grey jacket. He'll give you TM63 Nasty Plot.
Finally, speak to pair just down the stairs from this man. They're looking for a lens. Interact with the Stunky for the Wide Lens, then speak to the woman. You'll get to keep it, and gain the Zoom Lens as a bonus.
Approaching the Veilstone Gym (north of the Nasty Plot guy), you'll bump into Dawn.
Follow our guide on how to obtain your third Gym Badge!
Now that you have your third badge, the Mystery Gift feature will automatically unlock if you didn't have it already.
However, you should have got it much earlier!
As soon as you leave the Gym, you'll be stopped by Dawn. Team Galactic goons have stolen her Pokédex, and you need to help her get it back!
Heal up after the Gym battles, and head to where the Galactic pair guard the Warehouse.
Naturally, you'll have to take them down in a double battle.
Once defeated, the goons will give Dawn back the Pokédex.
You're now free to head inside the Warehouse, where you'll find TM94 Fly. Given you just obtained the Cobble Badge, you can use Fly immediately.
Simply open up the Town Map from the menu, hover over the town you wish to travel to, and press the A Button to select it.
Your next destination is Pastoria City. We're going to take Route 212, so fly to Hearthome City and exit in the south.
Route 212 (North)
Pokémon found on Route 212:
- Starly
- Staravia
- Budew
- Kricketune
- Roselia
- Magikarp (via Old Rod)
- Goldeen (via Good Rod)
You'll see a Honey Tree as soon as you enter the Route. Head south. You'll pass three policemen - if it's daytime, you won't have any issues, but if it's night-time, you'll have to battle!
You'll see a small lake with a Poké Ball next to it. This contains a Rose Incense, but you'll need Surf to access it so come back later.
Battle the rather well-dressed pair.
Pick up the Aspear and Sitrus Berries from the trees next to the pair, then Cut the tree to get the TM11 Sunny Day behind it.
Before you head to the Pokémon Mansion on the right, go south through the tall grass for an Elixir.
Double back and head through the gates of the Mansion. If it's night, you'll be accosted by another Policeman.
Battle past Rich Boy Jason and Lady Melissa, then head inside.
The Pokémon Mansion
Make sure to collect the following when you enter the Pokémon Mansion:
- In Mr. Backlot's office in the right wing of the house, you can get TM87 Swagger.
- In the far left room of the left wing, you'll find a Great Ball in a Poké Ball and a Burn Heal in the trash can.
- In the middle room of the left wing, a maid will give you a Soothe Bell.
Mr. Backlot explains that the defining feature of the Pokémon Mansion is the Trophy Garden, a place where Pokémon are attracted.
Check out our guide to the Trophy Garden, and which Pokémon you can catch daily.
Leave the Mansion and head south onto Route 212 (South)
Route 212 (South)
Pokémon found on Route 212 (South):
- Wooper
- Bibarel
- Roselia
- Kricketune
- Magikarp (via Old Rod)
- Barboach (via Good Rod)
Head south and take on your first pair of Trainers.
To the south you'll encounter Scientist Stefano. You'll find an Antidote to the south once he's beaten.
Head north, and then east. If it's night, you'll encounter another Policeman to battle.
Head around the lake, south, and east under the poles. You'll be accosted by another Trainer.
Head up the stairs from Dominique and get on your bike. Cross the pole to the right for TM62 Bug Buzz.
Head south onto the wooden bridge, and then all the way north. You'll encounter a pair of Fishermen you can battle by manually talking to them.
Head right from the bridge, cut the tree, and head up the stairs. Use your bike and take the southern pole across to the island.
Make your way around the trees and across to the island in the west, where you'll find a hidden Tiny Mushroom.
Return to the wooden bridge and head right, taking on the final Fisherman as you go.
Once you've crossed the bridge, you'll see the Shard Lady's house, with a Trainer outside to battle.
Inside, the Shard Lady will offer to exchange the Shards you dig up when in the Grand Underground for a selection of TMs.
Outside, head into the mud and up to the right to find a hidden Heart Scale. You can also use the Honey Tree to the left.
If you get stuck in the mud, just wiggle the joystick and you'll come unstuck.
Head to the southeast of the mud section for TM06 Toxic.
Make your way east, and you'll come across another Trainer to battle.
Take the path north directly under the overhead pole for a Revive, then return south, pick the Berries, and cut the trees.
Head north over the pole on your Bike, cut another tree, and pick up the X Sp. Atk.
Battle the Scientist here, then keep heading west cutting down trees. Defeat the second Trainer, then pick up the Zinc.
You'll find yourself back at the Shard Lady's house.
Return to the berry trees, and head right. An NPC will say something about the Great Marsh.
Head north through the mud to find a hidden Rare Candy.
Finally, make your way back through the mud and head right.
Welcome to Pastoria City!
