The Elden Ring Underworld is a vast world that players have been exploring for just over a month. Many of the game's mysteries have been uncovered, including walls that need to be tapped 50 times in order to break through and gain access to what's behind. However, it seems that Elden Ring still has a lot of secrets...
A bestiary?
This is what @JesterPatches discovered on Twitter, who uses unconventional methods to explore all the secrets of FromSoftware games. In the past, the player had discovered a lot of hidden content in the Dark Souls software folders. This time, he tackled the new kid on the block. Indeed, a bestiary , listing all the NPCs, would have been hidden among the game files…
We see two types of icons, those in light gray , in which it is possible to clearly see the NPCs, and more gray , which only show their overall shape. As in a classic bestiary and as JesterPatches said, this could indeed refer to NPCs encountered and/or defeated, and those that remain to be discovered.
It is not specified that it is indeed a bestiary but the 128 icons of different entities of the game present in the file suggest it.
An upcoming project?
Or an abandoned project? This is a question to which we unfortunately do not yet have the answer. It is true that the game does not (yet) have a bestiary and this could be a rather useful addition. On the downside, it wouldn't follow the "game guidelines" exactly. Let's explain. Elden Ring is an open world, which aims to let the player do his adventure, in complete independence. No quest log or bestiary is made available, with the real aim of making the game very realistic, as if the hero was really projected into the Underworld.
It may therefore be that the game developers want to keep this realism and that the "bestiary" seen by JesterPatches is unfortunately only a project abandoned along the way.
An item?
Another interesting theory put forward by @EvilCookie on a Discord server, the icons could be made to fit into an object (also non-existent in game) called "St Trina's Crystal Ball", or St Trina's crystal ball for francophones, which copies the haze of dreams of any entity. The object would hypothetically capture the essence of a sleeping enemy in order to use its abilities.
Visually, the icons stick very well to the crystal ball in question. Could it be a coincidence? Although Elden Ring players would surely be delighted to see a bestiary land in the next update, nothing has been confirmed by FromSoftware. It will therefore be necessary to be patient in order to see what the company has in store for the future of Elden Ring.
