Valheim Guide: How to craft and use Portals
0

The huge procedural world of Valheim isn't easy to explore and navigate when we're used to games that give us fast travel points, and easy-to-use shortcuts. Here's how to unlock teleportation and put it to good use to save time.

Valheim Guide: How to craft and use Portals

When you know what to do, teleportation can be unlocked fairly quickly in Valheim, which will allow you to make your trips back and forth between continents much faster and more efficient. They will allow you, for example, to move your main base much faster from one region to another if you find a better position. They will also prevent you from having to cross an entire continent naked to recover your body after a defeat.

Unlock teleportation

After defeating the first boss, Eikthyr, you'll be able to unlock the Antler Pickaxe — which allows you to mine different ores. You'll then need to unlock and craft the Bronze Axe in order to get Precious Wood. You'll also need Sturling Hearts, so head back to explore other Burial Chambers in the Black Forest. Later, you can get it in the Swamps as well. With these two items, the Portal should appear in the first "Miscellaneous" tab of the Hammer construction menu.

To build a Portal you need:

  • Greydwarf eye x10
  • Fine wood x20
  • Surtling core x2

How teleportation works

Build the first portal in your main base. It doesn't need to be under a roof. Then assign it a name or number by pressing "E" by default to open the marker. We advise you to immediately add its icon with its identifier on the map in order to retain its position and the code. This will be especially useful if you have bad memory, or to other players in multiplayer.

Your portal is obviously of no use to you until you have built a second one elsewhere. It is fashionable to go exploring with the appropriate materials in your inventory in order to save time and avoid unnecessary round trips. For information, all you need is a level 1 workbench within range to build a portal.

When the second portal is built, all you have to do is enter the same marker code to link it to the first portal. You then simply have to cross it to be teleported automatically.

Things get complicated from the third portal. The reason being that you cannot have more than two portals connected by the same marker. If you give the same marker to the third portal, nothing will happen and you will not be able to use it to return. You have to anticipate to avoid the problem. You can either change the marker of your main base in advance, in order to disconnect it from the second portal. Or you can build a second portal in your base, which avoids blockages, especially in multiplayer. You can even build more if you prefer fixed-destination portals, which eliminates the problem, but is expensive.

We advise you to number all your portals and to indicate them on the map each time with their number in all cases. So when you want to go somewhere, you just have to type in the number of the desired destination. Don't be afraid to have many portals across the map to save travel time with some farming points. This is especially important if it is necessary to cross the seas.

Teleportation and minerals

As you must have seen while mining, Tin and Copper cannot be teleported. This remains true even in the form of ingots, and for all the metals that follow, such as bronze, iron, silver, etc. This is rather logical, since it invites you to develop means of transporting goods. However, you can freely teleport wood, food, metal gear, and more.

The first alternative is to build a pull-along cart. It cannot be used to go through a portal, but you can put a huge amount of ore inside, the weight is not a problem. You can mine an entire area and make a single trip.

In many cases, your only option will be to travel by boat back to base. The Karve is fast and relatively manoeuvrable, but it doesn't have a storage section, which greatly limits its performance when you have multiple crypts to empty their tons of iron. It is better to orient yourself towards the Longship, the famous Drakkar, once your first cargo of iron has been brought back safely. It has a cargo bay and is more likely to survive a Sea Serpent attack.

The last option is to move your base close to your ore farming location, which is quite easy thanks to teleportation. But you will still have to transport the many ingots used in the buildings and the forge to your new refuge.
