The role queue was recently added in Overwatch. It allows players to choose between three defined roles — Tank, DPS and Healer — to play the now mandatory ranked composition known as 2-2-2. This new feature was more or less well received by players. The main drawbacks are that it isn't possible to switch roles and the waiting time to enter a game is long — especially for DPS.
In a post on the Blizzard forums, someone mentioned the idea of expanding the role queueby adding subcategories to existing roles. In Overwatch the roles aren't only divided into three categories. For example, there are main tanks — with protective shields like Reinhardt, Orisa, or Winston — and off tanks — who are more aggressive like Roadhog or D.Va.
The same applies to supports who aren't all considered to be main healers. This would allow all players to be able to play the sub-roles they know best without having to change their hero to get a viable composition. A Moira player could then focus on supporting damage instead of really healing because the other support player can't play Ana or Mercy.
Jeff Kaplan — lead designer on Overwatch — replied that it wasn't an option as they "want to reduce queue times, not impact them further."Waiting time is the main reason for this decision since that would mean waiting several dozen minutes to enter a game and that this is already a recurring problem in Overwatch. The conclusion of all this is that it seems impossible to satisfy all the players.
