Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Beta Review

As attention turns towards the release of Black Ops Cold War on November 13th, the first weekend of the beta has given PS4 players a look at what to expect when the full game is released.

After the huge success of the alpha which took place earlier in the year, the developers made a wealth of changes ranging from weapon balance, tweaks to movement, and so much more.

With these improvements in mind, we take a look at everything from the weapon metagame to the modifications made to the movement mechanics.

During the alpha, the AK-74u was arguably the best weapon to use, excelling in close-quarters engagements with minimal levels of recoil.

Prior to the beta, the game was hit with a huge dose of weapon balancing, tuning all weapons available in the beta in order to increase their viability on the battlefield.

This has proved to be a success, with very few weapons standing out in the same way as the 74u did on the alpha.

In regards to a standout weapon, the Milano 821 sub-machine gun was used by the aggressive players while the more passive players used the XM4 and the M16 tactical rifle.

The metagame felt extremely balanced, with all weapons being able to deal plenty of damage.

Whether it was 6v6 or 12v12 action, the maps on Black Ops Cold War felt fluid, predictable, and offered a range of positions to assert authority over the opposing team.

Satellite, Miami and Armada all received updates to spawns, making it much faster to get back into the action. While it was faster to get back into the action, it took a lot more man-power to flip the spawns, making it very easy to get stuck in a specific section of the map.

Other than the spawn traps, the maps felt very good indeed.

Movement from alpha to beta has changed dramatically. Silde cancelling is still present in the game but there is a slight pause once the player exits the slide, leaving you vulnerable to an opponent.

The main issue with the movement is the return of the G-Slide. The mechanic enables players to generate a quick boost of speed when initiating a slide when standing on a ledge or a piece of cover.

A lot of potential

The potential for Black Ops Cold War to become one of the very best entrances into the franchise is very high. With Treyarch continuing to modify and change a range of elements to the game, this particular title could well be one of the best there has been in recent years.
