Following 2020 breakout hit, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Mediatonic parent Tonic Games Group have been snapped up by the American giant behind Fortnite and the Epic Games Store.
In a statement published on the Epic website, CEO Tim Sweeney welcomed the studio into the fold.
“It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”
Dave Bailey, Tonic Games Group co-founder and CEO, added that he felt the group has "found a home that was made for us".
“They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team", he said.
In their statement, Epic have promised that nothing changes regarding Fall Guys — it will continue to be available and supported on multiple platforms, with Nintendo Switch and Xbox versions of the game coming soon.
They have also hinted at crossovers with their own smash hit, Fortnite.
“Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic," said Paul Croft, Tonic Games Group co-founder and Chief Games Officier.
"Whether it’s about making our own games the best they can be or empowering other game developers to take their content from a kernel of an idea to commercial success, we know that together we will be able to reach greater heights.”
Tonic Games Group is the latest in a string of acquisitions made by Epic in both video games and the underlying technology behind them, including Rocket League creators Psyonix and photogrammetry asset library Quixel.
The amount paid by Epic is as-yet unknown. Tonic Games Group includes developers Mediatonic and Fortitude, and publishing label The Irregular Corporation.
