Indeed, George RR Martin reveals that he has not played Elden Ring for the simple reason that he is afraid of developing such an addiction that he would not be able to finish his next book. We understand you, George.
One of us
"I didn't play it [Elden Ring] because people seem to want that book, Winds of Winter [the Game of Thrones sequel]," Martin said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, no without malice.
"I have, unfortunately, a totally addictive personality. I played video games a long, long time ago, games like Railroad Tycoon, Master of Orion, and Homeworld , and I got caught up in the game. Weeks, months went by and I was sitting there in my red flannel bathrobe thinking, 'one more game, one more game.' I can't, I have to stop playing, it's going to kill me."
Indeed, unlike us poor mortals, GRRM (for short) has a long-awaited book to finish. According to him, Winds of Winter is already three quarters finished, and it could well be around 1500 pages. And after more than 10 years of waiting , fans are most certainly relieved that Mr. Martin hasn't launched an Elden Ring playthrough.
His role in the development of Elden Ring
Georges Martin also spoke about his role in writing the history and world building of Elden Ring:
"Video games - which I didn't know - actually take as long to make as a great movie, if not longer. Intensive development," he said.
"[From Software] made it clear that Elden Ring was going to take place in, say, the 'present' of the game universe. They wanted me to write what happened 5,000 years earlier that had completely turned the world upside down, so the present was really in chaos. I went back and wrote a story of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who killed each other, and what powers they had."
In any case, Martin seems quite impressed and very happy with the end result. "It's the most beautiful game I've ever seen. It's really amazing, and incredibly detailed, and the people who play it love it, and I'm very gratified to have been a part of it."
We too George, us too.
