Each meat of Hearthstone has its dominant deck — and the meta of Saviors of Uldum doesn't deviate from this golden rule. It allows the big return of the Combo Priest, an archetype that was almost forgotten. In the history of Hearthstone, One-Turn-Kill (OTK) decks are often depreciated by the professional players: the Double Combo Druid or the Grim Patron Warrior are good examples of such a trend.
As usual, the current controversy started on Twitter via caster Sottle:
Follows a quite long talk with Dean Alaya, one of Hearthstone's developers — first on the actual viability of the Combo Priest, then on its effect on the current meta.
The developer compares the Combo Priest with the Grim Patron Warrior which used to perform really well — perhaps a bit too much. He argues that the Priest isn't a problem for the professional players especially because of the skill cap required to perfectly play the archetype.
However, he mentions the fact that some mandatory cards from the archetype — i.e. Inner Fire and Divine Spirit — are monitored by Blizzard because they're part of the Priest basic set and won't be affected by the yearly rotation. Dean Alaya explains that it's an actual possibility to see Divine Spirit being withdrawn from the Standard mode starting with the next rotation (April 2020).
Will the Combo Priest core cards get strike by the nerf hammer? The question remains until the next rotation...
