There are five bosses you’ll need to defeat in Valheim. Each boss marks the end of a chapter in your journey through Valheim. In this guide we’ll walk you through how to summon and defeat the second boss, The Elder.
After defeating Eikthyr, you'll enter the Black Forest biome. To find The Elder's location you'll need to explore the Burial Chambers and interact with the Runestones scattered throughout. Once you've found the right one, a marker will be added to your map.
Prepare for the Fight
Before you go looking for The Elder, you should prepare yourself for the coming fight. We recommend using a bow, with a plentiful supply of Fire Arrows — after all, he is a giant tree so he'll burn easily. Armor is also really important here to mitigate damage, so we’d recommend having some Troll armor at the ready.
Eating at least three pieces of food to make sure your health and stamina are at the maximum is also highly recommended.
How to Summon The Elder
Now that you’re prepared for the battle to come, it’s time to make your way to The Elder's altar. Once you arrive at this location, you’ll need to burn three Ancient Seeds on the altar — these can be obtained by destroying Greydwarf nests, and are occasionally dropped by Greydwarf Brutes or a Greydwarf Shamans as well.
The Elder will appear shortly after you burn the Ancient Seeds, so make sure to run a short distance to a safe space immediately.
The Fight against The Elder
The Elder is going to be a more difficult fight than Eikthyr, so building a house or portal nearby will make collecting your gear easier if you're not successful the first time around.
He utilises a mix of melee and ranged attacks, so be prepared to dodge a lot!
- Close range: The Elder stomps over a large area
- Ranged: The Elder uses vines directed at you
- AoE: The Elder raises his arm to summon Roots in a large area, which will attack you but they are immobile so can be dodged
Rewards for Defeating The Elder
The Elder will drop a trophy and and a Swamp Key.
Hanging the Eikthyr trophy grants you a Forsaken Power which will allow you to do more damage against trees, logs and stumps when using an axe.
The Swamp Key will unlock the Sunken Crypts, where you can mine Iron.
