This is a though time for Overwatch. Between homestands cancellation because of the coronavirus outbreak, and the announcement of the departure of Michael Chu, Lead Writer on the game, there's a lot going on.
For those of you who don't know him, Michael Chu is the one who made the Overwatch lore come alive and grow. Every character, every hero, every story that came out of his pen brought the game to life. He's the one behind each of the Origin Stories, behind the Uprising, the Venice Incident, and Retribution events, but also several Overwatch comics.
He's also wrote Bastet and Valkyrie short stories. He has worked on numerous games, from Diablo II to World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights 2 and finally Overwatch — and its sequel Overwatch 2.
Without him our games would be just an empty shell. Others worked with him but he was the master craftsman who allowed all the scenarios to converge and give us what Overwatch is now.
After 20 years, he's leaving Blizzard for other horizons to continue telling stories and creating worlds which unit people.
For him, Overwatch was a life-changing experience: "I have always felt that games and the stories they tell have the unique ability to bring people closer together, and that the empathy you feel from stepping into someone else’s shoes, even virtually, can bridge the gap between miles, cultures, and nations. Overwatch and its consistently generous and inspiring community have only reinforced that belief."
Nevertheless, his departure may mean that the story of Overwatch 2 is complete. This could predict a release of the game this year or early next year. As soon as we have more information about his successor as well as the lore of Overwatch, we'll let you know!
