Smash World Tour: Nintendo announces very bad news and puts the whole community on its back

While many were looking forward to the Smash World Tour, the organizers of the international tournament today announced some very bad news to their community. Something to start a real debate on the networks...

Many Super Smash Bros fans around the world have been looking forward to Nintendo's production event of the year: the Smash World Tour. The annual competition was to take place from December 9 to 11 with a gigantic cash prize of exactly $250,000 . However, the organizers of the international tournament announced the bad news yesterday...

The Smash World Tour 2022 is canceled

It is in a long statement that the organizers of the highly anticipated Smash World Tour announced their decision. Thus, the tournament which was to bring together the greatest Super Smash Bros players in the world will not take place and the competitors are forced to cancel their trip to San Antonio, Texas.

"Without any warning, we received notice from Nintendo on the eve of Thanksgiving informing us that we could no longer continue. This was particularly shocking given our dealings with Nintendo over the past twelve months. Since then, we have been working day and night to take the appropriate logistical steps, as well as to prepare this statement with the appropriate legal advice."

For Kotaku , the Nintendo teams responded to the statement from the tournament organizers, saying:

“Unfortunately, after ongoing conversations with Smash World Tour, and after giving the same deep consideration that we apply to any potential partner, we have been unable to reach an agreement with SWT for a full circuit in 2023. Nintendo has not requested any changes or cancellations to the remaining events in 2022, including the 2022 Championship event, given the negative impact on players who were already planning to participate."

To which the Smash World Tour organizers responded in a new statement:

"We don't know why they're taking this angle, especially in light of the general statement and everything in it. [...] To be clear, we haven't even submitted an application for 2023 yet, the license application was for the 2022 championships (submitted in April) Nintendo including all of the 2023 activity was an addition we didn't even expect In the call that accompanied the statement, we asked several times if we could continue to operate unlicensed as we had in the past under the same "unofficial" deal with Nintendo. We were told bluntly that those "times are over". They followed the call with their written statement, re-confirming that the 2022 championships and all 2023 activities are in the same boat."

The discord between the two entities seems to have settled and the users who were impatiently awaiting this international tournament also expressed their dissatisfaction on the networks.

Panda at the center of the case?

Now, many argue that Panda (a competitor to the organizers of the Smash World Tour) would be the cause of this cancellation. According to these disgruntled users, another world circuit would be planned by Panda in partnership with Nintendo and an exclusivity would have forced the Japanese company not to cooperate with the organizers of the SWT for this year. Nothing has yet been confirmed by the two companies.

From now on, professional players as well as fans of Nintendo's mythical license regret having to be reimbursed for their plane ticket as well as their hotel nights... 10 days before the official launch of the event. In any case, this cancellation will have marked the Smash Bros scene as well as the followers of the production who are now wondering when a new international circuit will see the light of day.
