In Fire Emblem Three Houses, fishing is a very simple mini-game that can be played on free days on weekends. Fishing does not consume Activity Points, and each fish caught brings in Teacher Points. You can, and therefore you will gain teaching levels partly through fishing. In other words, it would be a huge waste to miss it. The major limitation is the number of baits you will have in stock.
To be able to fish, you'll need to complete the "Fresh Catch" side quest given by Flayn first. You can go to her in Dining Hall to start it.
Fire Emblem Three Houses : how to fish
The in-game tutorial already tells you almost everything. Choose a bait (quality influences the chances of finding better fish) and then launch the line.
As soon as it bites and the QTE appears on the screen, press A without further delay to lock the fish, then press A when the circle of light passes over the purple strip on the screen. It's a rhythm game. If you press when it is on the white area, you will simply have a "Good" and the life bar of your line on the left will drop a little, as well as the fish life bar on the right. If you are in rhythm, you will have an "Excellent" and the life of the fish will drop sharply. By being in rhythm several times in a row, you will accumulate combos, which will accelerate things. If you only achieve "Excellent", you will get a perfect score, and the fish will likely be of better quality.
- Small fish only ask for 2 to 3 "Excellent" to be caught, while the rarest ones will ask you for 6 to 8.
- The life of your fishing line increases with your level of teaching, so it will be easier to catch large fish at a high level, even if it is generally very simple with one or two exceptions.
- You get a glimpse of the type of fish that awaits you thanks to its silhouette in the water and its life bar. It is determined randomly, with your bait and the current event having an influence.
Fishing Rewards, Bonuses & teaching levels
As mentioned above, fishing will earn you points for the next level, usually between 10 and 30 points depending on the type of fish. This can be a long process, but you will have to use all your bait until you are at the maximum level of teacher (A+), at least if you are looking to optimize your progress. It is possible to have dozens of baits in stock at times, which is enough to make you progress significantly, even towards the end, if you take the time.
At the beginning of the game, it is better to use your bait as soon as possible in order to get your teacher level up very quickly. For example, getting E+, D and D+ a week earlier is a great benefit.
Thereafter, it will be better to keep your bait for the special events detailed below, which will make them more profitable. The multi-catch fishing event is a real blessing in this respect, going up 2 to 4 fish each time will allow you to earn thousands of points if you have stored the bait. But don't hesitate either to use your bait stock, even without an event in progress, if it can obviously allow you to complete your level (count an average of 15 points per bait to do the calculation).
Fire Emblem Three Houses: where to find baits?
If there was no bait limitation, you could theoretically reach the maximum teacher level in the first phase of exploration of the game. It would take tens of hours, but it would be possible. Otherwise, it remains an excellent complement. Here are all known sources of bait:
- Collect them all over the monastery in third person view during the Free Zone.
- Validate quests that have bait as rewards.
- Scan an Amiibo in the dedicated area, random gifts often contain bait.
- If you have a Nintendo online subscription, once you have unlocked the online features, talk to international students and select the "Cache cache à 4" option, finding students will often earn you bait as a reward. Send one of your students on a transfer and call him back the next time will sometimes earn you bait as a reward.
- Carry out the "New Commercial Destinations" quest available in the month "Les Pluies Verdoyantes". After the battle, merchants will settle in the monastery's market area, they are available in Free Neighborhood mode only. You cannot buy their goods via the interface. One of these merchants sells dozens of replenished bait every month. This will be your main source of bait from the middle of the first phase of the game. This will allow you to stock up for the right times. There is no need to go back to see him every week.
Fire Emblem Three Houses: Events
Fishing events, when reported on the calendar, will generally be the opportunity to use your bait stock in the most cost-effective way. The good news is that the majority of them take place on the first weekend of the month. However, some are in the middle of the month, so you will need to plan your activities carefully.
- Biggest fishes: You have a better chance of catching big fish, which earn more points and are more valuable.
- Golden fish: Increases the chances of raising a silver, gold or platinum fish, which can be sold at a good price to merchants (200, 500 and 1000 ECU respectively). Perfect for making a fortune.
- Thousands of fish: Every time you go up your line, there will not be one, but several fish, so you will earn more teaching points (and more fish as well).
- Mysterious Fish: Recognizable by the golden aura above the pond, this event gives you a chance to catch the game's secret fish. You'll have to use your best bait and be lucky. Remember to make a backup before you start fishing. There is a slight chance that a sparkling fish figure will appear, so you will have to pass the QTE, which is much more difficult than usual, because it is much faster. The good news is that if you do, you'll earn a lot of points and a special kitchen component. This one can also be sold at a good price.
- Fishing tournament: Only happens once in the game. 50 special baits will be given to you and you will have to make the biggest catch. Fish caught do not generally earn points, but beating all your competitors will earn you many items as a reward. It is important to talk once to all the competitors in the area after accepting the fishing quest, including Leonie above. Go back and talk to them once you have a great grip. It will probably take a perfect score on a giant fish to win. You will have to bring up a Teutat Herring.
