Despite loot boxes being a controversial subject in the games industry, it has not prevented Overwatch from reaching the billion-dollar mark from in-game merchandise sales. The game is the sixth in the Activision Blizzard catalog to reach this milestone after World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Hearthstone, Candy Crush, and Destiny.
It should also be noted that Overwatch is the 64th game in history to pass this figure, taking into account all media combined.
Even though Overwatch has a large range of items for sale through the store, loot boxes clearly generate the most profit. Overwatch League tokens have also been very popular since their debut last year, and represent a significant financial windfall for the company. These enable fans to acquire cosmetics in the colors of their favorite team — between these and loot boxes, fans are spoilt for choice.
Given the new hero Sigma has just arrived on the PTR, it is quite possible to imagine that these sales will only increase in the near future, especially with new cosmetics for the hero sure to be on the horizon.
