There's a lengthy quest chain in New World that's exclusively for fishing enthusiasts, which rewards you with gear that offers bonuses to the skill. Is it worth it? Our guide reveals all.

New World Fishing Quest Guide: Obtain a Legendary Fishing Pole

The Fishing quest chain won't be for everyone in New World.

Spanning fifteen different quests, it requires a significant investment in terms of time spent fishing, and while there are good rewards on offer, it may not appeal to those who don't see fishing as a priority.

Here we lay out the quest line and its pros and cons.

A great way to raise Fishing levels
Rewards you with gear that offers bonuses to Fishing
Legendary Fishing Rod at the end
Low in XP gain
Low in Gold rewards

Fishing Quest Line Details

1: Fishing With Shields

Available from character level 5, you can pick up Fishing With Shields from Michael Shields, a Master Fisherman found just along the river to the west of Windsward Hamlet.

He'll ask you to collect Woodlouse Bait, which is one of the items dropped when gathering Bushes.

You'll earn 280 XP, 43.75 Gold, 250 Standing, and a Wooden Fishing Pole for completing the quest.

2: Fishing Basics

The next quest given by Michael Shields requires character level 10. First of all, you'll have to catch three fish, with any fish counting towards completion.

Take them to Dena Ruby, who is found on the coast west of Fort Everfall.

You'll get 520 XP, 50 Gold, 175 Standing, and a pair of Battered Fisherman's Boots. These are cosmetic, and offer no bonuses to Fishing.

3: Baited

Deana Ruby then gives you the next stage in the questline.

For this one you need to get hold of a Clam and a Snail, and deliver them to Dallas Clemenson. He's found along the coastline north east of Dayspring Mills, in First Light.

Both can be found in First Light, so just focus on finding them close to where you'll turn the quest in. Clams are found in saltwater, while Snails are fished up in freshwater.

Ypu'll get 870 XP, 78.75 Gold, 175 Standing, and the Battered Fisherman's Gloves. Like the boots, these are cosmetic only.

4: Hotspot Hunt

Once you've hit level 20, Dallas Clemenson asks you to catch three fish from Fishing Hotspots.

These are special areas with more chances of catching rare fish, and are easily spotted by the fish jumping out of the water. You can find a guide to hotspots below.

Once you have your fish, head to Quinton Warwick, who is found on the islands in the west of Monarch's Bluff.

You'll get 1,200 XP, 87.50 Gold, 250 Standing, and the cosmetic Battered Fisherman's Trousers.

New World

5: Practice Makes Perfect

Quinton Warwick then asks you to catch 15 fish. These can be any fish, but the quest itself requires you to be at least level 25.

Once you have the fish, travel to meet Edith Perchal. She is found in the north of Cutlass Keys, near the start of the river.

6: The Giant Ones

Once you've reached level 30, Edith will give you the next quest in the chain. She asks you to catch eight fish of 20lbs or more, and deliver them to Park Jennet.

In order to catch larger fish, you'll need to use special bait. Here are some good examples:

Oyster Bait

Obtained when collecting oysters.

Large boost to catching bigger fish in freshwater.

Clam Bait

Obtained when collecting Clams.

Medium boost to catching bigger fish in freshwater.

Meat Bait

Obtained through Cooking.

Small boost to catching bigger fish in freshwater.

Electric Eel Bait

Obtained when collecting Electric Eels.

Large boost to catching bigger fish in saltwater.

Snail Bait

Obtained when collecting Snails.

Medium boost to catching bigger fish in saltwater.

Fish Bait

Obtained through Cooking.

Small boost to catching bigger fish in saltwater.

You can also equip a fishing rod that includes the Fishing Colossus perk, which also boosts the chances of catching bigger fish.

Once you have the fish, you'll find Park Jennet at one of the lakes in northeastern Brightwood.

You'll earn 1,830 XP, 105 Gold, 250 Standing, and the cosmetic Battered Fisherman's Smock as rewards.

7: Fish Reagents

For this quest, you need to have hit level 35. Park Jennet asks you to catch a Quest Squid and a Quest Catfish.

Both can be caught at the lake right in front of you when accepting the quest. However, they are somewhat rarer than standard fish, so consider using the following bait:

Cheese Bait

Obtained through Cooking.

Small boost to catching rare fish in saltwater.

Nightcrawler Bait

Obtained when collecting Flint during the day.

Medium boost to catching rare fish in saltwater.

Glowworm Bait

Obtained when collecting Flint during the night.

Large boost to catching rare fish in saltwater.

Bread Bait

Obtained through Cooking.

Small boost to catching rare fish in freshwater.

Woodlouse Bait

Obtained when harvesting Bushes.

Medium boost to catching rare fish in freshwater.

Firefly Bait

Obtained when harvesting Bulrush.

Large boost to catching rare fish in freshwater.

Fishing in one-star Fishing Hotspots in the lake will also increase your chances of finding the Squid and Catfish you need.

Equipping gear that has the appropriate fishing perks will also help, including Lucky Waters, Lucky Day, and Lucky Night. Also, adding a Fishing-related trophy to your house (if you have one) also helps.

Once you have the fish, salvage them to get Squid Ink and Catfish Whiskers, and take them to Sheetal Agarwal. She can be found in the northeast of Weaver's Fen, near the coast.

You'll earn 2,380 XP, 122.50 Gold, 250 Standing, and Fishing Reward Box 1. This chest grants you either Hardy Fisherman's Gloves or Hardy Fisherman's Boots, which both increase cast distance and your chances of catching bigger fish.

8: Reel Life

At level 40, Sheetal Agarwal will ask you to fish up three Boots. A junk item, these are caught randomly, and can be fished up right in front of Sheetal. Using a low-level rod and not having any perks equipped will help, but this one is really just a grind.

Once you have the boots, take them to Finola O'Connor. She can be found in Restless Shore, in the southeast.

You'll get 2,380 XP, 122.50 Gold, 250 Standing, and Fishing Reward Box 2. This includes either Hardy Fisherman's Trousers or Hardy Fisherman's Hat, which grant medium boosts to catching bigger and more rare fish.

9: Weapons of the Sea

Finola then asks you to fish up even more junk, a Fish Headed Hammer and a Fish Sword. The drop rates of these are 30%, so you'll need a little more patience. Again, don't use bait or gear equipped with perks.

Take your junk to Tariku Abebe, who is found slightly northeast of Mourningdale Hamlet.

You'll get 2,380 XP, 122.50 Gold, 250 Standing, 20 Azoth, and the Hardy Fisherman's Smock as rewards. This chestpiece grants a medium boost to catching rare fish, and +2% to casting distance.

10: Treasure of the Deep

This next quest requires you to be level 45. Tariku Abebe asks you to fish up a Treasure Chest.

For this, a little more legwork is needed. The best way to do this is to head to a Secret Fishing Hotspot (three-star), and equip bait, perks and gear that increases your chance of rare catches. Naturally, the best quality bait (Glowworm, Firefly) is recommended.

Once you have a Treasure Chest, head over to Eberhart Klaus in the southwest of Great Cleave.

You'll get 2,640 XP, 131.25 Gold, 250 Standing, 20 Azoth, and an Ironwood Fishing Pole.

11: Soulwarden Rations

Once you've passed level 50, Eberhart asks you to catch five fish of 30lbs or more. Similarly to The Giant Ones, make sure you equip gear, perks and bait that increase your chances of catching bigger fish.

Another grind, when you have the fish you'll need to find Rory Davies. He can be found in Edengrove, on the eastern coast of the circular lake.

You'll earn 2,890 XP, 140 Gold, 250 Standing, 20 Azoth, and the Sleek Fisherman's Hat. This item grants a large boost to catching bigger fish, and a medium boost to catching rare fish.

12: Azoth-Tinged Fish

Requiring level 55, Rory Davies requests an Azoth-Tinged Fish. You can find this in the water right next to Rory, but it will take quite a lot of patience to catch given it's a rare fish.

Equip everything you have that boosts rare fish catch rates, and settle in for the farm.

One you've caught one, take it to Konrad Bernard in the Blighted Wilds area of the Shattered Mountains, in the east of the territory.

You'll get 2,970 XP, 148.75 Gold, 250 Standing, 30 Azoth, and Fishing Reward Box 3. This contains a random piece of Sleek Fisherman's gear, with the exception of the hat (as you already have it).

13: Corruption-Tinged Fish

Upon reaching level 60, Konrad Bernard requests a Corruption-Tinged Fish. This can be found in the waters right next to Konrad, and again will require all the boosts, perks and bait you have that increase rare fish drops.

Take the fish to Laquan Chang, who can be found in the settlement in Ebonscale Reach.

You'll get 3,750 XP, 157.50 Gold, 250 Standing, 30 Azoth, and the Fishing Reward Box 4 for your trouble. It contains either Fierce Fisherman's Gloves or Fierce Fisherman's Boots, which offer large boosts to size or rarity depending on which you get.

14: Ecological Report

For this quest, Laquan Chang wants you collect fish filets of different qualities. Again, this will require all the boosts you have, so make sure you equip them before you go hunting.

  • Fish Fillet (T1): Obtained from Common Fish (Bass, Bluefish, Flounder, Hake, Mackerel, Perch, Pike, Salmon, Snapper, Sunfish, Trout)
  • Firm Fish Filet (T2): Obtained from Common Fish, as well as Uncommon Fish (Catfish, Cod, Halibut, Sturgeon)
  • Tender Fish Filet (T3): Obtained from Uncommon Fish, as well as Rare Fish (Paddlefish, Swordfish, Speartooth Shark)
  • Delicate Fish Filet (T4): Obtained from the Rare Fish listed above, plus Electric Eel and Stingray.

Once you have all the filets you need, you'll find Gaspar Machera outside the settlement in southeast Reekwater.

You'll earn 3,000 XP, 112.50 Gold, 250 Standing, 15 Azoth, and Fishing Reward Box 5, which contains the Fierce Fisherman's Hat, Smock, and Trousers -- completing the set.

15: To be a Grand Master

The final task Gaspar sets you in this very lengthy chain is pretty simple - reach level 100 in Fishing. This is the most grindy of all, so here are the XP values for your catches to help you plan.

  • Common Fish: +100 XP (Small), +110 XP (Medium), +120 XP (Large)
  • Unusual Fish : +150 XP (Small), +156 XP (Medium), +163 XP (Large)
  • Rare Fish: +175 XP (Small), +188 XP (Medium), +200 XP (Large)
  • Legendary Fish: 550 XP

Once you hit level 100, speak to Gaspar Machera again.

You'll receive the Holy Grail for all anglers -- a Legendary Pole Reward Box. Inside is one of these:

Legendary Azoth Fishing Pole

Freshwater Colossus III

Large boost to chance of catching larger fish in freshwater.

Legendary Strength Fishing Pole

Freshwaters Brawn II

+15% Line Strength in freshwater.

Legendary Tech Fishing Pole

Freshwaters Brawn II

+15% Line Strength in freshwater.

As you can see, this quest line takes a lot of time and effort. However, the rewards can far outweight that grind, with resources that can help level up other crafting skills, experience, and gold.

Chances are, you'll also be able to sell a lot of the things you fish up that aren't necessary for the quests, or produce items from them that can go on the Trading Post.

Happy fishing!
