There are sometimes big surprises in the world of esports, and this was the case at the Pokémon Oceania International Championships, where a young girl named Simone Lim from Singapore was crowned champion of the Junior Division against more experienced opponents.
What was even more amazing is that she beat the unbeaten favourite and number one seed Justin Miranda-Radbord — a player who has won five of the eight Regional Junior Championships in the 2020 Championship Series so far.
The Oceania International Championships were held in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend, with the finals for all divisions taking place on Sunday. Pokémon trainers from all over the world gathered to test themselves in both video and trading card game tournaments.
Despite being 1v2 at the last, she perfectly predicted a Protect on Miranda-Radbord's Rhyperior, allowing her to take down the enemy Dusclops with Crunch. Then, knowing she had a speed advantage over the heavy Rhyperior, she unleashed Superpower — a Fighting-type move super effective against the Rhypherior's Rock-type. to finish the job.

It was an astonishing performance, and the cuteness overload was just intensified by a shy and humble post-match interview — as she clutched her Eevee plush in support.
It's these kinds of wholesome moments that make esports great.
