Battlefield 2042 Specialists: Everything you need to know

Battlefield 2042 was first announced on June 9, and the community has had a few questions about the Specialists. Daniel Berlin, Senior Design Director for Battlefield, answered those for us.

The developers presented four of the ten planned Specialists during the reveal — each character will have a specific role:  Assault, Support, Recon, and Engineer.

DICE announced that each of these Specialists are completely new, inspired by traditional Battlefield classes, and will each have unique traits and abilities — which cannot be changed, so only one Specialist will be able to use the wingsuit, and another will be able to use the grappling hook etc.

Squads will be made up of four players, and the developers believe there is potential for some great combinations. In addition, players will be able to customise the loadouts:

  • Primary weapon
  • Equipment (items that anyone can use, such as a medical crate or a supply crate).
  • Secondary weapon
  • Accessories (such as a fragmented or incendiary grenade).

Here’s an example of what a custom class could look like:

  • Primary weapon: M5A3 (assault rifle).
  • Equipment: Supply crate.
  • Secondary weapon: G57 (handgun).
  • Accessories: Frag Grenade.

Of course you will have to consider your role on the battlefield when deciding whether you want to carry an RPG or a rocket launcher instead of a medical kit or supplies.

Specialists also have skins which will help you differentiate between allies and enemies, these skins will allow you to alter their appearance over time and EA has confirmed that cross-progression and cross-commerce will be featured.

Lastly, there were questions about the Ranger trait — the developers have reassured us that the Rangers will be available to all Specialists. These robots can scout, as well as access “areas where traditional wheels, rotors, or thrusters falter”.

A live preview of the game’s multiplayer mode will be unveiled at EA Play Live on July 22.

In addition, the developers insist on the fact that players will not be confined to playing with a single arsenal thanks to the customization of the loadings. You will be able to customize the following:

  • Primary weapon
  • Equipment (items that anyone can use, such as a medical crate or a supply crate).
  • Secondary weapon
  • Accessories (such as a fragmented or incendiary grenade).

Here's what a custom class might look like:

  • Primary weapon: M5A3 (assault rifle).
  • Equipment: Supply crate.
  • Secondary weapon: G57 (handgun).
  • Accessories: Frag Grenade.

Note: However, the traits and specialty of an operator cannot be changed.

The community also seemed perplexed about launchers, such as RPGs, Redeyes and other rocket launchers. The developers claim that all players will be able to have these weapons, as long as they have them set up on the class before the fight. The place of rocket launchers is that of Equipment, so if you want to have an explosive approach to the battlefield, you will have to skip a medical kit or a supply cargo.

To continue in the customization, your specialist can dress in different skins to bring a little difference in the war zones. Because, with regard to possible duplicates, the developers have set up specific colors for the opponents and very different appearances for each specialist.

Then finally, the community wondered about the Ranger trait. The developers want to reassure the community by explaining that the Rangers will be available to all specialists and that this is not an exclusive feature. These peons can scout if you want to give them an order. DICE sees a good range of possibilities with the deployment of rangers, but this choice will be made in spite of another, much like rocket launchers.

On July 22, Battlefield 2042 will unveil even more through an EA Play Live for a preview of the game's multiplayer.
