More about God of War Ragnarok was revealed during the last PlayStation Showcase thanks to a few minutes long trailer. Although the video is enough on its own, Studio Santa Monica still wanted to give some details about the future of the saga.
Thus, we learn that Ragnarok will be the end of the Nordic story that began with the reboot of the franchise in 2018. The reason is simple: time. Creative Director Cory Barlog explains that he doesn't want players to have to wait 15 years to follow a trilogy:
“One of the biggest reasons is that the first game took us five years to make. The second game, I don't know how long it's going to take exactly, but I'm going to assume that it will take that long. […] If you assume that it will be the same for the third, we are still talking about an interval of almost 15 years for a single story and I think that is too much ".
He adds that given where the story was, it was quite possible to put an end to this intrigue around Norse mythology and the complexity of the relationship between the two protagonists with Ragnarok. The goal was not to lose players with an extended trilogy while being fair with the story the studio wanted to tell:
"We could make it into an ocean and make these ripples stretch for thousands of miles, but is it necessary and beneficial? Or do we feel like it just disperses them, that the ripples are too far from each other and we lose track of the story a bit? "
God of War Ragnarok is slated for release on PS4 and PS5 in 2022 . No specific date for the PlayStation exclusivity therefore, but Kratos and Atreus will visit each of the nine kingdoms very soon in order to best prepare for the end of the prophetic world.
