With Amazon Games receiving plenty of questions about a New World release for console, an interesting side topic was broached in their communications with players on social media.
Is New World playable with a controller?
Given gameplay relies on just three abilities equipped per weapon and combat mechanics more akin to a Souls-like title, plenty of fans would like to play New World on a controller.
In a reply to a question on Twitter, Amazon Games revealed that there is no native controller support planned for New World.
However, the reply does state that players could try to use the Steam controller, which allows for total flexibility in customising profiles.
This also extends to other controllers, by using Steam's custom controller profiles. It's a laborious task, since it requires assigning everything to buttons, and it's easy to miss out some key inputs. However, it is possible.
This requires Steam's Big Picture mode. Follow these instructions to create a new controller profile:
- Connect your controller to your PC
- Open Steam, go to Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings > your controller
- Create your custom configuration and then save it.
Remember to run Steam in Big Picture mode before launching New World, and if all has gone to plan, then the controller should work. It's not something we can guarantee, however, so be prepared to return everything to default should it fail.
This Reddit thread also has a good custom profile you could try, using the Steam Overlay.
Whether or not proper controller support will be added in the future remains to be seen. It's worth remembering that Amazon originally planned to ship the game with it included, so those discussions and tests are likely to have taken place at the studio.
