Diablo Immortal: should we fear tracking and transmission of your personal data via the game?

While digging through Diablo Immortal's files, dataminers have come across some suspicious terms, which would suggest that the game would use a facial detector and geolocation. Blizzard immediately reassured fans on this point.

The launch of Diablo Immortal is imminent, but the community still gives itself a few free scares, a few days before the long-awaited date. Very recently, a handful of dataminers and veteran players have pointed out certain files present in the game. These bear names like "FaceDetector.dll", "FacialAnalyser.dll" or even "LandmarkTracker.dll" .

They clearly suggest a potential tracing of your personal data (face via the camera, geolocation, etc.), as exists on a very large number of mobile games. But Blizzard, through Adam Fletcher ( the Community Lead of Diablo Immortal, editor's note ), immediately reassured everyone.

An abandoned idea

Adam Fletcher explains that these are just names given to old files that no longer have any impact on the final version of the game. Also on Twitter, the Community Lead explains that these files come from an idea that was quickly abandoned by developers. The idea was to give players the possibility to duplicate their own facial expressions on those of their in-game characters. The feature has been forgotten, so you have nothing to fear: Diablo Immortal does not track your location, nor what is in front of your camera!

Diablo Immortal

The old demons of mobile games

The concern of the community was nevertheless understandable. Many mobile games, especially those that use augmented reality like Pokémon GO, ask you whether or not you consent to the application accessing certain photos and/or screenshots.

In general, it is recommended to always carefully read the conditions of use and the rules governing the protection of personal data before tackling a mobile game. And it's a great thing that Blizzard has made this clear before the release of its game.

Diablo Immortal: on App Store and Google Play Store, is the game off to a good start?

Criticized during its very first announcement at Blizzcon 2018, Diablo Immortal made a very good launch on PC, IOS and Android, four years later. The mobile game is at the top of downloads in many countries, whether on Google play store or App store.
